We were lucky to catch up with Calvin Rafah recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Calvin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My strong work ethic comes from my experiences. I dedicate myself to working hard every day without pause; that’s a fundamental part of who I am. For seven months, I consistently posted on social media three times a day without missing a beat, and that’s how I define work ethic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a fashion designer and the creative director of my own brand, my art is all about merging innovative design with a sense of timeless style. I draw inspiration from various sources, blending contemporary trends with classic elements to create pieces that are not only fashionable but also meaningful. Each collection tells a story, reflecting a fusion of cultural influences, personal experiences, and an unwavering commitment to quality and detail. It’s a journey of constant exploration and expression through fabric, texture, and form.
My journey to where I am today professionally has been a blend of passion, dedication, and continuous learning. I started with a deep love for fashion, immersing myself in the industry through education and hands-on experience. Building my own brand required not just creativity but also an understanding of the business side of fashion. I faced challenges along the way, but each obstacle was a learning opportunity that helped me grow. Collaborating with talented individuals and staying true to my vision has been key. It’s been a rewarding path, filled with hard work, perseverance, and the joy of seeing my creations come to life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’ve learned several key lessons on my journey. Firstly, resilience is crucial. The ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep pushing forward is essential in any endeavor. Secondly, the importance of staying true to your vision while remaining open to new ideas and feedback cannot be overstated. Flexibility allows for growth and innovation. Thirdly, building a reliable network of supportive individuals is invaluable. The guidance, encouragement, and expertise of others can help navigate challenges and open doors to new opportunities. Lastly, the value of continuous learning and adaptability has been a significant takeaway. The industry evolves, and being willing to grow, adapt, and refine my skills has been crucial to staying relevant and successful.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
In fashion design, creativity and attention to detail are crucial. Staying current with trends, understanding fabrics, and mastering technical skills like sketching and sewing are important. It’s also vital to have a unique vision and the ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences.
To accelerate learning in fashion, focusing on practical experience like internships and hands-on projects would be key. Networking with industry professionals, taking specialized courses, and staying updated on trends would also be important. Additionally, constantly practicing design skills and seeking constructive feedback would help greatly
