We were lucky to catch up with Cam Monroe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cam, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
After graduating from high school, I felt like one of the few who didn’t have it all figured out. I went to a fine arts school where most of my classmates were heading straight to New York for musical theater or dance programs. While I loved theater, I knew it wasn’t my lifelong path. I started college during the height of the pandemic, and let’s just say it didn’t go as planned—you can laugh, I do too! By the end of my college journey, I felt like I had tried everything. I was a nursing student, an English major with dreams of teaching, and even explored psychology. But nothing felt right, and everything left me burnt out.
During a break from college, I began working as a spa coordinator and fell in love with the salon world, particularly esthetics. It felt like the perfect blend of everything I had pursued in college, wrapped in one creative package. Helping women feel their best and most confident selves fills my cup and makes my heart beat. I aspire to be that teacher, confidante, and therapist for each client who walks through my door. There’s truly nothing better than that.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
In school, I unexpectedly fell in love with waxing. I originally thought I’d focus on facials, but I discovered a whole new passion. I spent as much time as I could in the wax room, and I knew that after graduation, I wanted to specialize in waxing.
I was fortunate to be introduced to Adrienne, the owner of The Bush Waxing Boutique, through a friend of my mom’s. It couldn’t have been a bigger blessing. I’m still what we call a ‘baby esthetician,’ but the amazing team at The Bush has taken me under their wing. They’ve taught me so much, not just about waxing, but also about time management, spirituality, health, and how to be the best technician I can be for my clients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I still feel like I’m at the beginning of my journey and am continuously learning these qualities myself. One thing I’ve found invaluable is being open to critique. In the beauty world, there are countless ways to do things, and you’ll hear many different opinions. Absorb it all—take that knowledge in like a sponge. You never know when a piece of advice might completely change your technique or answer a question you have down the line.
Be ready to jump in and try anything! Fully immerse yourself in the beauty world by becoming a ‘yes person’ for a bit. While I wouldn’t recommend this forever—because it can be exhausting—when you’re just starting out, take every opportunity to learn, improve, and network. There have been many times I felt anxious before an event or service, but once I did it, I felt so strong and proud of myself—it made it all worth it!
Finally, be yourself! You’ll attract the people who are meant for you when you are your most authentic self. My favorite moments are when a client leaves a session, and it felt like a hangout with a friend. That’s the power of attraction—bringing like-minded people to you. And who doesn’t want a bunch of clients who feel like besties?
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Every esthetician has their own path, but I knew early on that I wanted to start my career with a specialization. Facials and skincare came naturally to me, but waxing was something I knew I would need to work hard at to become great. As I expand my services throughout my career, I want to stand out by being deeply knowledgeable about every product, ingredient, and service I apply to my clients’ skin. Rather than trying to be a jack of trades, I strive to master each area I focus on.
