We recently connected with Camden Yacobucci and have shared our conversation below.
Camden, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I think that my self-discipline goes back to the year I realized I had very bad OCD. I was about 12 years old when I started making up little routines to make myself feel more calm. These routines could be from tapping things an even amount of times or it could be a feeling of restlessness until a certain task was completed. It started out in a very unhealthy way causing me to have mental breakdowns and extreme uncomfortable feelings throughout my whole body. I soon started to take medicine to calm the anxiety that came with my OCD but eventually I stopped taking it to really try to heal these habits on my own. Once I was able to control it, I could start turning it into a positive thing. I started using it to get large amounts of work done in a very timely manner as well as using it to become very passionate and driven towards the task at hand. It hasn’t always been easy, but I have come a very long way turning what once was a draining mental illness into a beautiful desire to accomplish something great.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an American musician born and raised in Stow, Ohio but currently based in Columbus, OH. I have moved around from Brooklyn, NY to Los Angeles, CA learning many different things and being inspired in so many different ways for my music. I put together a full band in 2020 to bring an exciting live show to cities. We are releasing our first ever track together titled “YOU’RE SO COOL” on Friday October, 13th! The song focuses on the idea of it being “cool” to go through hard times and make mistakes. We don’t want to be perfect because nobody is. Love yourself and everyone else around you for who they are! That’s what makes you “cool” and that is what this new song is all about.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Number one would have to be finding balance! I had to learn this the hard way by burning out multiple times. I wouldn’t allow myself time to rest and relax because I felt that I didn’t deserve it. I have learned that I am way more productive when I make time to be with friends and enjoy this life instead of constantly worrying about the hustle and bustle this world deceives us with. Number two would probably be resilience. Never be afraid to go all in on something. When you know that something is worth fighting for, never let that feeling go. People will start to notice the longer you work towards a certain goal. As long as you are passionate and resilient, then nothing can get in your way. Don’t give up!
Number three is to enjoy the journey. Look back on how far you’ve already come. There are so many times I am so worried about tomorrow that I forget to be thankful for everything right in front of me and everything I have already accomplished. Your dreams came true the moment you decided to chase them.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Lately I have been having a very hard time seeking validation. For some reason my anxiety gets worse when I second guess myself and the music I create. I love everything I do but as an artist it gets harder the longer you are in this field. I am learning to balance out the desire to want more approval from more and more people. I started to notice this after my last single. Life has been amazing, but when it gets good I always think it could be better. I am slowly working on this and I know I can certainly overcome this obstacle in my life.
