We recently connected with Cameron Gullo and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Hey I’m Cam – I’m an artist manager, working with a mix of worship artists and groups, and pop artists. Growing up as Pastor’s kid, naturally I was handed a guitar very early, and so I developed a love for the arts and Jesus music from the start. This took me on a long journey of pursuing my own artistry, until unfortunately, as years went on, I gave up, I didn’t make it – was too hard and felt defeated. I pursued an alternate career in sales and business. The narrative was that I must have (seismically) missed what God had for me. Fortunately, and to quote my mother, “nothing is wasted in the Kingdom”, and for me, no truer words have been said. After some time out of the arts, God brought it back into my life like a tidal wave, in a way that I didn’t see coming, but in a more perfect way. I’ve ended up in the business side of the industry, and with WAY more alignment to my natural giftings, and utilising all of the experiences I had growing up pursuing artistry. Praise God
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I manage Alexander Pappas who is part of Hillsong Young & Free, I’m also working with a bunch of different worship groups from around the world, helping them successfully release their records, and helping take care of all of the label side of things, including publishing, distribution etc for them. I’m also on the team working with a pop artist of massive note, both as her guitarist (believe it or not) and on management functions.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My dad always said if you’re trying to find out what to do with your life, combine what you’re passionate about, AND what you’re naturally good at. He’s so right.
I read a lot of books, good books, about how to get better at life, and there’s been particular books that actually CHANGED my life. As in, I was going in one direction (working as an accountant) and then I read Rich Dad Poor Dad, and I quit that week and got into sales. It seriously changed my life. I use the sales skills every day now. Imagine if you’re just one book away from a changed life. The books help you get good at stuff too. And you need to be good.
Thirdly, invite God into everything. actually everything. Every transaction, every sentence, every email, every deal, every time you tap your card to pay for your coffee. Walk by faith. See what He’ll do with a willing life
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Play to your strengths! When a coach assigns his or her players, they do so according to their strongest positions. Malcolm Gladwell argues at length in his book David and Goliath that more often than not, being a big fish in a small pond is the play. And speaking of David and Goliath, David played to his strengths, he didn’t come close to Goliath and fight in close combat, he stood afar off, and being a highly skilled slinger, he took the giant out – playing to his strengths!
