We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camila Cardona a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camila , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Dance has been a significant part of my life since I was five years old. Exploring different styles taught me discipline, creativity, and the value of self-expression, laying a strong foundation for my early confidence. Later, my confidence grew even more when I lived abroad for the first time, working in Mexico at age 21. This new environment challenged me to adapt quickly, step outside my comfort zone, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. The experience taught me resilience, independence, and how to trust my abilities-qualities that continue to support my personal and professional growth. Together, these experiences have truly shaped who I am today, both on stage and off.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Camila Cardona, a Latina artist whose roots run deep in the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires. Being Latina isn’t just a part of my story; it’s the heartbeat of everything I create. Growing up surrounded by traditions, music, and dance, I’ve always felt a powerful connection to my heritage, which shapes how I perform and approach each role. My journey has been all about blending the influences of Buenos Aires and the fast-paced energy of New York to share stories that feel real and exciting. My work allows me to express these different sides of myself—whether I’m embodying fierce characters on stage, like in a reimagined production of Carmen at Lincoln Center, or dancing alongside icons like Gloria and Emilio Estefan in On Your Feet, The Musical.
What keeps me inspired is that every role is a chance to discover something new, not only about the story but about myself. Right now, I’m diving into projects that blend dance and visual art in immersive, boundary-pushing ways. One of the most meaningful experiences for me was performing in a groundbreaking, Broadway-bound revival of Evita under Sammi Cannold’s direction, where I explored the iconic role of Eva Perón in a fresh, authentic way. Each project offers new challenges, pushing me as a performer and allowing me to connect deeply with audiences.
I see my work as a celebration of Latin culture—its warmth, fire, and soul—in every movement and story I tell. Right now, I’m especially excited about choreographic projects that bring the power of Latin culture to global audiences in fresh, modern ways. I want people to feel a sense of connection and community when they see my work. My journey is about honoring where I come from while pushing forward, sharing the unique strength and beauty of being Latina with every stage and screen I step onto. For me, it’s all about connecting with people and, hopefully, inspiring a few along the way. I can’t wait to share what’s next!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I’d say three qualities have had the biggest impact on my journey as a dancer: a strong technical foundation, versatility, and patience. Studying Contemporary Dance gave me a solid base, with daily classes in ballet, jazz, tap, and even courses in anatomy and lighting design. Those technical skills taught me how the body works, how to move safely and precisely, and how to adapt to different styles.
Outside of college, I also took singing, acting, and hip-hop classes from a young age. These varied experiences made me versatile and open to new forms, allowing me to explore and push boundaries in my work today.
For anyone starting out, my biggest advice is to try everything. Don’t limit yourself to one style or skill. If you’re passionate about dance, explore different genres; if you love painting, experiment with various techniques. And don’t stop there—immerse yourself in all kinds of art. Visit museums, get lost in a good book, go to the theater, and experience as much as you can. The more you expose yourself to, the more tools you’ll have as an artist, and that’s where your unique style will start to emerge.
Also, time is your ally in this career. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, so give yourself the grace to grow and evolve. Stick with it, Keep marching, trust the journey, and keep an open mind. Every experience, connection, style, and challenge adds to who you are as an artist.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Living in NYC can definitely feel chaotic at times! To find balance, I turn to nature as much as possible. I’ve found hidden gems around the city—parks and quiet spots where I can feel connected to my surroundings and recharge. These moments in nature remind me to breathe and reset amidst the hustle.
Journaling is another essential tool for me. It lets me pour out my thoughts onto paper, giving me a moment to reflect and process. It helps me make sense of everything swirling in my mind.
My therapist has also been a huge support throughout this journey, especially in dealing with the challenges of immigration and being far from my family. My community here in NYC, along with my family back in Argentina, gives me strength and reminds me of my roots during tough times.
My advice? Find your own hidden gems, embrace journaling, and lean on your community and loved ones. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. Taking care of your mental well-being is just as important as honing your craft and artistry.
