We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camron ‘Big Cam I Am’ Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Camron ‘Big Cam, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I am a dreamer. I always have been and always will be. I have seen a lot, and I refuse to believe that the small bit of life I have been exposed to is the limit for me. I believe that I can do anything I put my mind to. A lot of that is due to my faith in God. I truly believe that anything is absolutely possible. So even when things aren’t going the best I believe it’s going to turn around.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a comedian/content creator who started this journey about 5 years ago. I started out in local comedy clubs doing open mics, and on facebook doing meme videos. I remember once being paid a $10 Quiktrip card, a jump drive, some peppermints, and a pen for fifteen minutes of standup. I also remember a time where I could only get about 300-600 views on every video.
I dedicated myself to the grind and over the last year I have built my following from 40K to over 1.3million. I have had over 100 million+ view videos, and I have accepted traveling paid engagements from here to Atlanta. I’m also a TikTok, Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram partner. None of this came without hard work though. Last January 1st I chose to dedicate myself to the grind, and posted a video everyday for a year and a half.
I say none of this to gloat but only to inspire. If you want to do something different you have to do something different.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance – It’s hard to keep going when you’re not seeing the fruits. I refused to focus on the negative, and kept the dreams at the forefront.
Goal Oriented – I found out that I am addicted to accomplishing. That said I have to keep creating new goals, because after accomplishing one thing I’m ready to push towards another.
Dedicated – I am dedicated to my end game. I have things that I want to see and show my family before I leave here. That said, I can’t stop clawing and scratching for my family, and my community.
You have to understand your why, and make sure that you stand behind the content you begin to make. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing you will get burned out.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I face is the misunderstanding of my platform. When I created ‘Another Satisfying Racial Moment’ I thought it was clear what it stood for. I stand against racism, prejudice, and micro aggressions. But I stand for compassion, understanding, appreciation, and forward thinking. That said, certain people have tried to paint my ability to call out the unjust in a comical way as hateful.
This has in turn limited my ability to monetize my content, and although I have had astronomical numbers and success, my growth has been largely ignored, and under represented. It blows my mind that the ‘ASRM’ movement has been heard all over the world, and received over 600 million views, but until this day has still not been Nationally recognized, with any type of major media coverage.
My goal to remedy this issue is to simply keep creating, keep climbing, and keep building my movement. There are some larger projects lined up that I think will truly show the nature of my content in it’s purest form.
This year has been crazy as far as stand-up opportunities. I hosted the ‘For The Culture Fest KS’, I’ve spoken at Kansas State University and other colleges, and I also opened for Social media and stand up great Tony Baker
