Meet Candi Usher

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candi Usher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Candi, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My father. He’s a man who grew up in the Southside of Chicago. He lived during the era of Martin Luther King and Malcom X. He saw the riots, the abuse, and how desegragation affected America as a whole. My father later went into the Air Force, choosing to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps protecting this country. The same footsteps I followed in going into the Navy.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am am a mother of four sons (one in heaven). I am a Navy veteran (8 years of service). I am currently attending Walden University pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology. I homeschool my two youngest sons. I am currently in the process of writing my 3rd book on my mystery/suspense/thriller series Locced and Loaded Ladies and Faded Men. The chapters are named after parts of hair journeys, while at the same time entrancing readers with a mind blowing story of manipulatinlon, people being used as pawns, and a hidden tyrannical leader attempting to bioengineer the perfect humans.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three qualities that have impacted my journey is faith, love, and tenacity. I believe that God’s will will always be done in my life, and I surrender to His will. Love because it’s unconditional. Love for myself, children, and family make me push harder for the next level. Tenacity because I have buried a child, been abused, and went through so many other life changes, yet I’m still standing despite the times I almost have up. My advice to anyone in this path is know who you are. Don’t let anyone define you by your past. It shaped you. The past brought you to where you are. Now develop a better future.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

If I could collaborate with anyone, it would be someone who could take my stories and bring them to life, especially my Biographies, such as Lifetime or OWN. I believe both could help the vision and create a lasting impact on others, especially young men and women who need to hear that just because it happened, doesn’t mean you have to stay in the place.
