Hi Candice, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience, to me, is about relentless forward motion. It is the ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. captured this perfectly when he said, “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” That is what I think about when I think of the word resilience. Let us be on the same page when it comes to the definition of the word. Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. So, when I am asked where do you get your resilience from, it requires me to tell you a story. The story is about being phenomenal and succeeding in the face of adversity because the things that you want and feel, you may have to fight like hell for. Resilience is a mindset and only you get to choose if it defines you, destroys you or makes you stronger. Building resilience is critical for growth and change.
Often, we are tested, not to show our weaknesses, but to discover what we are made of and how strong and powerful we really are. My journey is a testament to this principle. I have confronted immense challenges – child abuse, homelessness, domestic violence, incarceration, and suicide. Yet, I have transformed these experiences into steppingstones, rebuilding my life from the ground up.
No matter how bleak the situation, it did not own me entirely and it was up to me how I would respond. Malcom X said it best, “There is nothing better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time.”
Resilience is a choice. It is about believing in your own strength and refusing to be defined by your circumstances. It is the fuel that drives me to set ambitious standards for myself and to overcome obstacles. Ultimately, resilience is the cornerstone of my identity, a symbol of my unwavering determination to succeed. I have a love affair with myself and each day I fall in love with the process of knowing that my resilience comes from the power within. I hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else expects of me. I remind myself that I am and have always been a PHEMONENAL Woman.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There were multiple areas of knowledge that have impacted my journey. However, if I must give you three, I choose (1) Mental Health and Awareness, (2) Faith, and (3) My Daily Drs Blueprint!
MENTAL HEALTH & AWARENESS
Mental health is foundational to overall well-being. It shapes our thoughts, feelings, and actions, influencing how we navigate life’s challenges. Your inner picture will determine your outer world. It impacts your thoughts, how you think, feel, and behave. It influences our behavior patterns, how we interact with other people, work, and overall well-being. Good mental health enhances your quality of life. It will contribute to a happier and more fulfilling life. In society, we are told to be healthy, get in shape and exercise. We rarely hear you must build or work on your mental muscle. In my practice working on your mind is just as important as working on your body. I believe that you can’t get your body tight until you get your mind right. Working on your mental health is essential for your personal well-being. It deserves attention, care, and DE- stigmatization.
FAITH
Faith provides strength, resilience, and perspective during difficult times. Let go and let God. We are responsible for our choices and actions; however, God chooses the consequences and outcomes based on the work you are willing to do. Be careful of your choices especially in times of sadness, anger, and disappointment. Your consequences and rewards are one choice away. Choose wisely! Feelings are not facts they are moments in your life. Don’t make a permanent decision on a temporary moment or situation. No matter what happens, with God’s help and your actions you will rediscover pleasure and joy. Make the decision to do and be better for yourself by taking care of you. Now is the time to work on your wellbeing, body, mind, and spirit. When life happens and knocks you down, you can depend on your faith and your body’s equity to stand up for you in your moments of weakness. Remember that you are not being tested to show your weakness but to discover your power and strengths. “God gives power to the weak and faint, and to those who have no might he increases strength.” Here is what I know for sure, better is always available if you want it and are willing to do the work to get it. So, when life knocks you down you now have the power to get back up. Give yourself some compassion, create your happiness, laugh out loud and remember to breathe. You get to decide.

Years ago, I conquered cancer in my 30s. This experience instilled in me a profound understanding of the power of holistic wellness. I discovered that true healing comes from within, and I transformed this knowledge into my “superpower” – empowering others to experience the same transformative journey.
