We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Candice Robertson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Candice below.
Candice , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I have been able to maintain my optimism through the love I feel from God. I truly see the beautiful light in humanity. I have lived a life that has allowed me to understand the pain, sorrow, hopelessness, and fear we all experience. I have seen tragedies become triumphs in the most terrifying moments. Seeing every person, no matter their environment or circumstances, as a reflection of myself. Knowing that there is one thing we all have in common. No matter what your race, your gender, your beliefs, your chosen partners are, there is one common thread we all share and that is we are all human. Everything you see in another is you. This truth allows me to have compassion and empathy and love that’s unconditional. Therefore, I see the light in life. I feel the joy and peace in life. Life keeps me optimistic.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My most important part of who I am is being a mother of three beautiful children and a grandmother of one granddaughter. I have had a career in Door Frames and Hardware in the commercial construction industry. I specialized in schools and hospitals. I am so blessed to now have the opportunity to return back to college to pursue a whole new adventure now that all of my children are adults. I chose to go back to school because I spent a lot of time helping and getting to know the unhoused, mentally ill, and addicted individuals. I saw beautiful human beings that were so talented. People that were hurting and just needed to talk, needed a hug, yearned for kindness and respect. Not because of their condition but because of who they are. I felt this passion to help. I want to be apart of the change of the stigma and ignorance around these human beings. How can I make a difference that will affect many issues in a positive way?
I have always loved to learn. I used to always say, “If somebody paid me to go to school and learn for the rest of my life I would.” With this in mind I decided it was time to go back to school and learn about media. Communication is where there is a breakdown in society with these subjects. I was led to San Antonio College due to the Radio/TV/Film/Broadcasting degree program. I had a vision of having a traveling podcast focusing on the people in the streets and the music I heard them doing. After a few semesters I realized I loved so many areas of media. I decided I am going to make documentaries out of the podcasts and I’m going to do this without exploiting the community of people I will meet.
The hands on experience was and is phenomenal. The RTVB program offers a free fiesta concert every year called Fredstock. This is an amazing professional event that is completely ran by students and the help of their professors. I interviewed the bands and it was fabulous. San Antonio College has their own radio station KSYM 90.1 FM, and TV station SATV. I was given the opportunity to announce the news and weather for KSYM Monday through Friday, which led to having my own 3 hour DJ spot on the Third Coast Music Network Tuesdays from 4 pm to 7 pm, both of which I still do today. Pure San Antonio Talk, a live Internet show from 8 am to 10 am Monday through Friday, contacted the station and asked if I could do the news spot for them after they heard me on air. To be quite honest this is the beginning of a career I hope to turn into a platform for the causes I think are important to all of us in our community in San Antonio.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The qualities I have had that make my journey possible through the years have been my faith, my integrity, and my passion.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The most crucial challenge I am currently facing in my journey is my education and experience I need to complete. I am currently a returning college student working on my degrees in Radio/TV/Film/Broadcasting and Liberal Arts.
I made the decision to create a whole new future in the direction of service through media. I am reaching my goals in so many areas through my dedication to my education. The connections I am making are essential to my success. I am constantly forming new goals and that’s how I stay aware of the difference I can make in this world with others, if I stay focused.
