We recently connected with Candice Schutz and have shared our conversation below.
Candice, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
In 2005, after being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism while being pregnant I didn’t understand what this meant. I didn’t think it was a big deal, because I had a healthy pregnancy. My doctor explained to me that If I did not go on the proper medication this could effect the babies health, so naturally I start the medication right away. At that point I started learning what Hypothyroidsm meant and how it could effect me and the baby. This started to peak my interest in Holistic Medicine…yes! Holistic Medicine! As I knew there was a whole world out there with a different perspective I didn’t quite understand. I started educating myself, and I started buying organic. I started reading labels more. I started asking a lot of questions in my tiny local store – don’t forget whole foods wasn’t around like it is now. I felt alone in my thought process. Honestly people looked at you funny when you would ask where the organic section was in the food store – and It was tiny. Then in 2007 I was pregant with my second son. This gave me even more purpose to make sure my family was as healthy as possible. I educated myself on vaccines, food, environmental pollutants, and the water we drink, and so much more! Then in 2008 we were hit with the unthinkable – CANCER! My first husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. We were slapped in the face with this horrific disease and I thought that we were doing everything right. “How could this happen to us?”
At our first appointment with the oncologist, desperate for answers, I noticed a big bowl of candy sitting centered on the receptionist’s desk. I was perplexed to say the least. Was this for the cancer patients? I thought it was common knowledge that cancer not only loves sugar, but actually feeds and grows on it. And even if it wasn’t common knowledge, surely an oncolgoist’s office would know this, no? This enraged me! As we went back to speak with the doctor, frustration began to boil inside. I tried to stay patient, but my first question was “How does this happen?”. The doctor grimly smiled and answered, “Its’s just bad luck.” Now you could imagine how this frustrated us! I felt as if something was missing. While the doctors knew most about medicine and treatments once we were sick, there was a lack of preventative and alternative options. This is where my purpose began!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1-When embarking on our wellness journey, our emotional and mental state should be optimal. When you wake up in the morning we all have to pee! Once you go, and then wash your hands (I hope you do this! lol) I encourage you to take a pause, look in the mirror intently. Tell yourself how much you are loved, how proud you are of the beautiful image you see reflecting back. If any negative thoughts arise, understand that it’s ok. Recognize them and blow them away. You have got this! You are amazing! When holding this space, you can make positive choices for your day and life. In addition do the things you love, and make you the most happy! A nice walk, massage, or even yoga will change your day.
2-Sleep deprivation will alter your entire day physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Prioritize getting a good night’s sleep. Mindful breathing exercises can help before bed. Not having a heavy meal four hours prior to bed can really help aid in a restful night sleep. Keep your heavy meal for the afternoon! Also journaling prior to bed can really help. Set your positive intentions for the next day, and lay your weary head on your pillow and thank your higher power for the beautiful day you just had.
3-Detoxify your household – not only your foods because I can talk all day about that, but so many things in your house have toxins. Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, and laundry detergent can affect your hormones. Some companies use soy that can make candles harmful to our health. Alternatively, pure oils in diffusers can make your home smell amazing.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I am overwhelmed I take time for myself! This is crutial! I step away from what is overwhelming me and breath into it. I really enjoy box breathing. You inhale for a count of four through your nostrils, then hold that inhalation for a count of four, then exhale slowly for a count of four. When you inhale, inhale all good intentions. When you hold, hold all those intentions in your heart space, then exhale all negative thoughts. Do this four times. You will feel an immediate release of anxiety and stress.
I like to also walk often, especially on a nice day to clear my head. Being outside brings me a sense of peace and tranquility.
Lastly pamper yourself often! I mean that! Taking care of yourself helps reduce feelings of overwhelm because it promotes a sense of balance and resilience through mental clarity, emotional resilience, time management, and self-awareness. Love on thyself!
