We recently connected with Candice Weiser and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Candice with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”
Colossians 3:23 NIV
I try and live my life with this scripture in mind. As a follower of Christ, I want to please the Lord; not because it will earn my way to heaven, but because I want to please my Heavenly Father.
My foundation comes from my parents raising me in a Christian home, and they both instilled in me the values of hard work and perseverance.
I am a wife, a mother to three beautiful children, a small business owner, a school counselor by day, and a Biblical counselor by night.
The Good Lord and my work ethic are the reasons my small business, Fourth Street Mercantile, is the store it is today. It is a quaint shop opened to display Godly gifts and talents of many wonderful people in my community.
It began with an unusual calling I questioned frequently, asking God, “What exactly do you want me to do with this building? You want me to acquire shelves and rent out this space?” I prayed repeatedly, asking the Lord for guidance and obedience.
Like any small business owner starting out, my finances were limited. I prayed for things such as inexpensive shelves, and God laid them in my lap and put generous people in my path.
I spent many days, evenings, and late nights picking up a variety of pieces for the shop. This required hard work and perseverance painting shelves, researching interior designs, and rearranging furniture in order to create the perfect vibe and an aesthetically pleasing environment.
After filling the shop with shelves and other pieces, I sought to fill those shelves with a variety of special items. The journey began with a conversation with a wonderful man who is now my coffee guy, roasting his own beans to sell his brew. Soon after, the store flourished, thanks to the gifted individuals who made their own products to place in the shop. I could see these small town artisans needed an inexpensive space to display their products. As time passed, God brought in a variety of people with different talents, and the shelves became full.
The shop is a place where consumers can purchase homemade detergent, local honey, whipped beef tallow, locally-designed clothing, handcrafted jewelry, and much more. Our sweet and talented staff and vendors help breathe life into this wonderful space.
Fourth Street Mercantile has been a huge blessing, and I take great pride in watching it evolve. It would not be possible without my devoted husband, my loving family, and the gifted people who have shared their wisdom, creativity, and encouragement. I am filled with excitement as we approach our one-year anniversary on June 27, 2025. The Good Lord blessed me with a vision to see the talent in my small town, and I am still in awe. It is through Him alone I have seen my vision come to light, and I am forever grateful for God’s gift, The Fourth Street Mercantile!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a young adult, I felt the Lord calling me to serve as his hands and feet through counseling others and assisting with their mental health. This led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Texas A&M University and later a Master of Arts in Counseling from The University of Texas at San Antonio. For over twenty years, my professional career has focused on pursuing God’s plan.
I began my profession working for a severe psychiatric center, as well as an adoption agency, until the Lord placed a strong desire on my heart to work more directly with children. At that time, I was led to continue my education, obtaining my Texas Teaching Certificate, as well as my School Counseling Certification. As the Lord continued to guide me, I completed a one-year program called Equipped to Counsel and became certified through the Therapon Institute as a Certified Belief Therapist.
The path God laid before me has led me to where I am today as a Middle School Counselor, and I am confident it is exactly where God wants me to be during this season of my life. I am so grateful He blessed me with The Fourth Street Mercantile so I can pay it forward by giving others a place to share their many talents and hard work. I want our customers to feel the love as they enter the shop, and my hope is that they find the one special item they are looking for. The Fourth Street Mercantile is a Christian store where everyone can find unique items made by one of our gifted and talented vendors. From crocheted animals to sweet baby onesies to hand-carved wooden trucks, our shop is filled with heartfelt items ready to be gifted to a loved one.
When I am not at school or serving in our church or hanging out at The Fourth Street Mercantile, you will find me spending time with my wonderful husband and our three beautiful children, most likely sipping coffee outdoors or enjoying our swimming pool, thanking God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hard work, Faith and Obedience,
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
We hope to attract clients who appreciate the time and effort it takes to create each hand-crafted item in our store. When customers come to visit, I want them to feel the love and hard work that has been put into creating the store, as well as the unique items we carry. Over forty vendors from our community have worked tirelessly to craft the items we sell, and we hope our customers appreciate the dedication and time spent on everything they see. As they stroll through the shop, we would love for our clients to enjoy a cappuccino or glass of iced tea, or perhaps taste a fresh scone made by one of the locals. There is no better way to let others know you’re thinking of them than by purchasing a unique gift from The Fourth Street Mercantile.
