Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Candice White-parker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Candice, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
You know how they say the Universe conspires to put you exactly where you are supposed to be?
Looking back, I truly believe that that was the case for me.
As a kid and teenager, I had fame and artistic dreams, I wanted to be “out there”. I was an athlete and had hopes of Olympic career. All of that was put to an end when I badly injured my knee in my Senior year which crushed my plans for College… It was also that year that I studied Psychology and Philosophy for the first time: loved it!
Besides that, I spent hours in rehab wondering what I would do with my life. Then something told me that I should go for something that mixed psychology and medicine: Physical Therapy! On top of that my PT was incredible and loved doing my rehab in his practice : so why not having the same kind of job? Interacting with and helping people feel better, what a rewarding thing.
Fast foward 15 years; I had a successful PT practice that I loved but my husband and I wanted more from life than just doing the same thing in the same spot for 40 years (then retire and die, arghh!).
So I sold my practice, our house and everything we had to move to the US with our 2 kids. Starting over!
I thought I was done with my healthcare career and explored the Luxury retail world which I loved too.
Long story short, after 4 years and a burn-out, it was finally clear to me that my purpose was to help people feel better (not selling bags). I haven’t looked back ever since and I am trully grateful to fulfill what I love doing.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an over educated Healer (lol). The Human Body is fascinating and there are so many things to learn about it that you can be a life time student of it (I know I will be).
I started my Healer journey with Physical Therapy and Medical Massage. Then I spent a year learning various types of Massages (holistic, reflexology, Thaï chair massage…).
I then studied what is my favorite healing technique, Osteopathy (a 5 year training): this is Myofascial Release, trigger points, adjustments (just like Chiropractic), cranio-sacral and visceral techniques.
This is how I can relieve you of chronic or acute pain just with my hands! I find it absolutely incredible. This technique is mainstream in Europe and Canada but not in the US, which explains why people here don’t know about it (although it was an American Physician and surgeon that founded Osteopathy in Missouri in the late 1900s).
I have always been attracted to the Eastern Medicine way of thinking, holistic and striving to get the root cause of issues and preventing them from coming back! This is why I started training in Reiki, as I feel like Energy plays an important part in healing processes.
I expanded my knowledge with an NASM Personal Training Certification (Specialized in Stretching) and in Nutrition with a Health Coaching Certification after I became diabetic only a year after moving to the US! Thanks to that, I reversed it and I am now sharing what I learned about the food industry and their products. One thing important to keep in mind : read the labels and don’t get fooled by marketing!
All of the “Tools” I learned I share through my practice and my Brand: YES FOR WELLNESS.
I would love the heal the World and I am doing so, one person at the time; I want people to be happy and fulfilled and you need to be in good Health to do so.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First of all, I think the key ingredient to be a good Healer or Therapist is to LISTEN to what people are saying. It takes time and compassion to help you heal. Society is going too fast and trying to push kick fixes on you. All good things take time. So Patience is required.
Second of all, my personal philosophy is that I don’t know everything; therefore sometimes I will not be able to fully help you. That is ok: being truthful about your own limitations saves everybody’s time. On top of that, I have learned so many things that I would never hesitate to recommend you another Therapist or Healer that might be a better fit to help you in your journey or that might be complementary to what I do, which leads me to my 3rd key.
Team Work: you want to go fast, go alone. You want to go far, go with chosen people who will help you to do so.
I find it important to have a like-minded network of professional who want the same thing as I do: make you feel great!
The Therapist journey can be a long and alone one, especially in big cities like New York. I am grateful to have found my circle of trust! People you can ask for advice, support or help in your practice or business.
This is why I consider myself as a Conductor. I am here to help you in your journey, in your best interest.
Find yourself a Healing Team that support you would be my greatest advice.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
There is a particular challenge that I have been facing since I launched Yes For Wellness in mid-2019.
You see, I come from Healthcare in France; there, Health is not a business and the direct consequence of this is that I had no marketing or commercial experience.
Starting a business in New York where most of people don’t know your technique (Osteopathy) and where the market is full of Healers is not easy, but doable.
Adding launching that business through a pandemic, that made it a challenge! It has put to the test my confidence, my ability to learn new skills, fight impostor syndrome and deal with the stress that comes with entrepreneurship (aka paying the bills!)
To summarize, Resilience was key. I learned life lessons out of this. Never forget what is the end goal: fulfill your Purpose, that is helping people being pain free, well and happy for me. Heal the World, one person at the time.
I surrounded myself with like-minded professionals that are showing me how to navigate a business everyday and support me. I am so grateful for them!
