Meet Candice Zinner

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Candice Zinner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Candice, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
In our fast-paced, demanding world, taking care of ourselves often takes a backseat to the many responsibilities and commitments we juggle daily. However, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It’s a practice that empowers us to be our best selves and, in turn, better equipped to tackle life’s challenges. I have a quote on our drink coasters in the foot detox area  that says “The most productive thing you can do is RELAX” -Mark Black. It’s a great reminder I read often and live by.

“I have a deep appreciation for self-care practices such as massages and facials, which I hold in high regard. If circumstances allowed, I would indulge in these rejuvenating experiences on a weekly basis. Additionally, I prioritize movement in my routine, favoring yoga sessions and nature walks as my preferred forms of physical activity.

Exploring novel events at Salty, such as sound baths, breathwork sessions, and Reiki, plays a significant role in anchoring me to the present moment and facilitating restorative experiences. Engaging in literary escapism through reading fiction or watching films serves as an effective mental retreat for me.

I have also learned the importance of establishing clear boundaries and recognizing when to decline commitments to prevent burnout. Furthermore, I’ve made a conscious effort to focus on nourishing my body rather than simply eating in response to hunger cues.

These incremental lifestyle changes have had a profound impact on my overall well-being, mental outlook, and, in turn, my approach to managing my small business. I have observed a significant shift in my mindset, reduced reliance on medications, and an increased appreciation for the positive influence of these practices on the success of my entrepreneurial endeavors.”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Salty is located in beautiful Chardon, Ohio, on the square. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our friendly salty crew, which includes a certified halotherapist, reiki master, and esthetician — all ready to help support you on your wellness journey and explain the benefits of halotherapy that we use at Salty.

Enjoy our man-made salt cave and graduation tower with over 23,000 lbs of salt from the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland. Try the infrared sauna, foot detox, or salt booth before treating yourself to one of our many premium spa services, so you can look and feel your best while escaping from all the things life can bring. We also have monthly events and a shop so that you can take Salty home with you and continue to care for yourself.

My husband and I created Salty as a place for anyone to relax, recharge, and rejuvenate after experiencing the benefits of integrating halotherapy and natural remedies into their own self-care. I specifically, discovered it helped with my allergies most. In this fast-paced, always-on-the-go society, it’s important to slow down and recharge. So, take a few moments for yourself. Breathe in and relax.

We have so many exciting events with new and returning favorites! You can enjoy the benefits of the salt cave along with full moon yoga, meditation, soundbaths, native American flute, breathwork, massage, reiki, angel card readings, and so much more!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Resilience and Perseverance: Starting a business can be challenging, and you’re likely to face numerous setbacks and obstacles along the way. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from failure and adversity, is essential. You’ll need the determination and perseverance to push through difficult times, learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward despite setbacks.

Effective Leadership: As a business owner, you’ll need to make a wide range of decisions, both big and small. Effective leadership involves not only making informed and timely decisions but also inspiring and leading your team. Good leadership qualities include the ability to communicate clearly, delegate tasks, build a strong team, and make strategic choices that align with your business goals.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Inflation and rising interest rates. Inflation is driving up the cost of goods and services, including raw materials, labor, and loan rates. Increased operating costs and higher debt servicing costs is straining available funds, making it difficult to meet day-to-day expenses and financial obligations. People are prioritizing essential purchases, leading to decreased sales for businesses selling non-essential or luxury goods. I am trying to stay on top of my financial statements and budgets, adjust pricing, be transparent with customers, be at many community events to promote my services.
