We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cano Cardenas . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cano below.
Hi Cano , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
To be candid, my upbringing was profoundly influenced by the unwavering dedication of both my parents and my grandmother. From my earliest memories, my father exemplified diligence by rising at 5 a.m. daily, immersing himself in the morning newspaper over coffee, and diligently fulfilling his responsibilities, whether delivering papers every Saturday or maintaining his fitness regimen. Meanwhile, my mother demonstrated resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, crafting her own workout attire and marketing it at fitness expos, She was also a fitness trainer that gained recognition as one of the top six trainers nationwide. Even in the face of adversity, such as her knee injury, she seamlessly transitioned, pursuing further education and embarking on a successful career in the film industry.
Lastly, my grandmother instilled in me the ethos of constant productivity, often reminding me, “Mi Hijo, there is always something to do.” Her tireless work ethic encompassed not only diligent household upkeep but also extensive involvement in her church community, providing assistance to family members, and extending a helping hand to those in need. Under her guidance, I learned the value of service and responsibility, frequently accompanying her to aid individuals unable to help themselves by assisting with household chores, trash removal, or moving the lawn.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
For those who may not be familiar, I am Cano Cardenas, the proprietor, roaster, barista, and wearer of many hats at Caffeine & GREEN LLC. Our journey began six years ago with the inception of the internationally recognized Caffeine & GREEN podcast. Four years ago, I expanded our venture into the realm of roasting, and two years ago, I proudly opened our inaugural brick-and-mortar establishment in North Park, San Diego.
Caffeine & GREEN isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a manifestation of cultural diversity. We proudly embrace and represent various cultures, including Hip-Hop, Creative, and Latin cultures, welcoming anyone fatigued by the monotony of traditional, hipster coffee establishments. Stepping into C&G, you’re greeted by a vibrant tapestry of sights – from Nipsey Hussle murals to skateboarders, MMA enthusiasts, and fellow coffee connoisseurs – all converging in what some acclaim as the epitome of San Diego’s coffee scene.
However, all journeys have their chapters, and ours is approaching its final pages at 3072 El Cajon Blvd. Our beloved brick-and-mortar establishment will bid farewell on Sunday, June 30th. Yet, amidst the bittersweet farewell, I am filled with anticipation for the forthcoming chapter. Change is inevitable, and I embrace it wholeheartedly, eagerly anticipating the celebratory send-off alongside our cherished community, friends, and family. Join us for the grand finale – it’s going to be lit, so make sure you pull up!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The foremost skill, arguably the most pivotal, is encapsulated in the resounding mantra: “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!”. Embrace the role of your own greatest advocate, recognizing your unparalleled worth. Others may currently bask in victory, but your moment of triumph is on the horizon; until then, diligently prepare and remain poised for the opportune moment. What is luck but the fusion of preparation and opportunity.
Let’s be clear: the journey is rife with both triumphs and tribulations. Resist the allure of overconfidence during prosperous times, just as you mustn’t succumb to self-doubt during moments of despair. Having experienced the spectrum of highs and lows, I understand the struggle, particularly during the darkest moments. Yet, allow yourself the catharsis of tears, the release of exertion, the solace of camaraderie – whatever it takes to persevere. Always bear in mind: YOU GOT THIS, and we’re committed to this journey until the very end! So…LET’S GET BACK TO WORK!
My second skill would be proficiency. Proficiency is paramount. You must hone your skills to such a degree that they become undeniable. Initially, rejection may be plausible, but through unwavering perseverance and steadfast dedication, your pursuit of mastery will ultimately become irrefutable.
In conclusion, I’m uncertain of the appropriate categorization, but to succinctly put it, Love. Throughout the past four years in business, and particularly over the last two and a half, the profound love I’ve both given and received has proven to be utterly indispensable for both professional and personal success. It’s as straightforward as that.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
As we prepare to close our brick and mortar location at 3072 El Cajon Blvd on June 30th, I’m reflecting on the journey we’ve shared. While it’s the end of one chapter, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead for Caffeine & GREEN.
At the moment we are currently exploring new ideas, including setting up a roasting facility and hosting monthly pop-ups in our community. I’m immensely grateful for our loyal customers who have become friends. Their support has been the backbone of our success, and I’m honored to have shared this journey with them. As we transition, I invite you to join us in embracing the future. Together, we’ll continue to build a community centered around great coffee and lasting friendships. Thank you for being a part of our story.
