We recently connected with Capri Everitt and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Capri , so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
There comes a point every so often where I feel completely burnt out and uninspired. This then leads to a block in my ability to write and create. I started to notice that it was only happening when I wasn’t happy or emotionally connected to what I was creating. I think that creative or writers block for me at least, comes from a place of insincerity. When I start to feel this coming on, I simply have to take a deeper look into what I’ve been creating whether it’s content, music or a side project. Usually I find that I’m only blocked when I’m not fully proud of the work I’ve been doing. I’ve been trying to avoid this lately by trying to step back from my work more often and make sure I feel like it represents who I want to be.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer and performer from Vancouver, Canada. I moved to Los Angeles three years ago at 16 to chase a career in music and entertainment. I started performing at eleven when I traveled to 80 different countries to sing 80 different national anthems to raise money for the charity “SOS Children’s Villages.” After this tour, I was hooked on the idea of life on the road and performing around the world. I started releasing pop music at 13 and this eventually lead to my move to the States. Ever since then, I have been writing music non-stop as well as learning the ropes of this crazy industry and trying to level up my art.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I feel like the most important quality I’ve learned over the past few years in the music business is not to take things personally. I have (like most artists) had to deal with a fair amount of rejection and disappointment and have learned that it’s not all because you or your creative projects aren’t good enough. Sometimes it just wasn’t the right time for you.
Secondly, I learned that the people you have around you, whether that’s personally or professionally, can make a huge impact on your life. One of my favorite discoveries was a book about the “law of conformity” and it taught me the impact the people you keep in your life have on you.
Lastly, I learned there is no “magic solution” to success. There is no such thing as a “back door” especially in 2024 where the playing field has been almost completely equaled out. The internet is breaking more stars than ever and no amount of connections can make the tiktok audience like you more. All you can do is try to create the best music, the best content, and be consistent. That is ultimately what will separate you and make you stand out among the masses.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
One of the biggest critiques I have received over the years was that I had a great voice but needed to “find myself” a little bit more. As a seventeen-year-old-straight-out-of-high-school girl, I was like what the heck?! How on earth can I “find myself” and what does that even mean?? I spent so long trying to rush to find my identity so that I would feel accepted by these people that I looked up to so much, just cause I wanted those opportunities so badly. Looking back, if I had been given those breaks back in the day, I would have likely not have learned so much about myself through the struggle of having to do it all by myself (with the help of my wonderful momager of course). Over the past twelve months, I know I have grown my confidence and as a result, have “found myself” (at least in my music lol.)
