Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caralyn Dreyer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Caralyn, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from surviving experiences that could have broken me, including sexual assault, a suicide attempt, and domestic violence, and navigating the ongoing challenges of depression and anxiety. Through it all, I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about never feeling pain, it’s about choosing to keep moving forward, even when the weight of the past feels unbearable. My strength comes from the people who have stood by me, the love I carry for my son, and the small victories I claim every day. Each challenge has taught me that my story doesn’t define me, it empowers me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a mental health recovery advocate, writer, and content creator, drawing on my personal experiences surviving sexual assault, a suicide attempt, and domestic violence, as well as navigating depression and anxiety.
My work focuses on sharing honest stories of trauma, healing, and mental wellness to show others that recovery is possible, their struggles are valid, and they are never alone. I operate mental health blogs, including Darkness to Dialogue: Living Well with Mental Illness and Darkness & Recovery, host Through the Darkness: A Mental Health Recovery Podcast, and I’m currently working on a book about mental health recovery. What excites me most is the connections my work creates,?reaching people in vulnerable moments, offering insight, and reminding them they are seen. At its core, my brand is about authenticity, emotional wellness, and fostering a community where mental health is openly supported and celebrated.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, self-awareness, and the courage to seek support. Resilience has allowed me to keep moving forward, even when facing trauma, depression, or anxiety. Self-awareness has helped me recognize my triggers, understand my needs, and make intentional choices in my healing. And the courage to seek support, from trusted friends, mentors, and mental health professionals, has been essential in navigating challenges I could not face alone.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to practice patience with yourself, prioritize learning about your mental health, and build a supportive community. Developing resilience takes small, consistent steps; self-awareness comes from reflection and honest assessment of your experiences; and courage grows as you reach out, share your story, and accept help. These qualities are not innate, they are skills you can cultivate, and they form the foundation for long-term healing and growth.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months, the biggest area of improvement for me has been embracing vulnerability and sharing my story more openly. For years, I hesitated to speak candidly about my experiences with sexual assault, domestic violence, and mental health challenges, even though sharing can be incredibly healing, for both myself and others. Over the past year, I’ve taken deliberate steps to lean into that discomfort, through writing my blogs (Darkness to Dialogue and Darkness & Recovery), podcasting (Through the Darkness), and engaging with my community. This openness has strengthened my connection with others, deepened my advocacy work, and reinforced my own resilience and self-understanding.
