We were lucky to catch up with Carey Fullilove recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carey, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
In 2015, my little sister passed away unexpectedly at the age of 19. This was the most painful experience of my life. Navigating personal grief can be incredibly challenging, yet it fosters resilience in profound ways. Grief forces you to confront deep emotions—sadness, anger, and loss.
During this difficult time, I discovered I was pregnant. What a year that was! It prompted a significant perspective shift for me. I turned to yoga, seeking better coping strategies. My first guided meditation sessions and yoga classes during pregnancy hooked me immediately. There’s a healing magic in yoga and meditation that truly must be experienced firsthand.
The yoga mat mirrors life, teaching us how to navigate its ups and downs. My yoga journey is intricately linked with my grief journey and my empowerment. After eight years of practice and the experience of raising two children, I had the privilege of studying under one of the best teachers in the world, Dawn Feinberg, and became a certified yoga instructor. Now, I offer a nurturing space for healing and growth in my classes.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Carey Fullilove, and I’m a mother of two living in Miramar, Florida. As a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance, I embrace yoga as a holistic practice that blends physical postures, breath control, meditation, and spiritual well-being. This ancient practice dates back thousands of years, and I help my students explore their minds and bodies in a safe and supportive environment. While yoga is relatively new to the West—particularly Ashtanga yoga, which was introduced here in the 1960s—my journey in this lineage has been transformative. I studied under Dawn Feinberg at Ahana Yoga, who has been my teacher for eight years and a pillar of the yoga community in Miami. I am deeply grateful for my teachers; I wouldn’t be who I am today without their guidance.
In addition to teaching Vinyasa yoga, I have a profound passion for wellness, community building, and connecting women. These elements go hand in hand and truly represent my calling. In today’s modern society, being a mother can feel isolating, so I always welcome children into my classes. Moms carry immense pressure and responsibilities, and I love creating a space where they can feel seen and supported.
In our increasingly virtual world, it’s easy to feel disconnected. For me, teaching yoga is a love language; it requires trust and repetition, allowing for an exchange of energy between myself and my students. I offer hands-on adjustments, turning the practice into a healing experience that challenges individuals to recognize their true selves while acknowledging our shared suffering. The human experience is undeniably difficult, but there is a path to bliss and enlightenment that has changed my life. I strive to give from that space.
I also enjoy collaborating with entrepreneurs, hosting events, and providing giveaways for my students during classes. I truly believe that we rise by lifting others.
I’m incredly excited to share that in Spring 2025, I’ll be hosting my first-ever yoga retreat, in collaboration with the remarkable, Sarita Shimizu (@shimi_pop), a dear friend and gifted teacher. We’ve designed this retreat as a truly exclusive and curated experience, blending the transformative power of yoga and meditation with opportunities for deep connection, adventure and joy. It’s more than a getaway; it’s an invitation to immerse yourself in a journey to self-discovery and renewal in a beautiful, intention space. Stay tuned for more details!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I teach from a deep understanding of life’s challenges, viewing each person as a reflection of the divine. In serving others, I’m connected to something far greater than myself—a principle rooted in Bhakti yoga.
Life isn’t linear; it’s a tapestry woven with ups and downs. How we perceive, judge, and respond to these experiences is entirely our choice. We have the power to choose—choose joy, choose love, and lead with those intentions.
Overcoming imposter syndrome and finding my voice has been a pivotal part of my journey. Sharing my truth and passion can feel incredibly vulnerable and daunting. However, I transformed the question “Why me?” into “Why not me?”—and that shift has been a total game changer.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
As a yoga teacher, I’m excited to explore collaborations with hotel brands in Miami. My goal is to expand my reach and create unique wellness experiences for their guests. I believe that integrating yoga into the hospitality experience can enhance overall well-being and offer guests a transformative journey during their stay.
