We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carla Kemp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
When I’m the only one in the room, I stay confident and believe I belong there. I use my unique perspective to share insights that others might not think of. I also make sure to speak up and take my space, so my voice is heard. These strategies empower me to succeed and reinforce my sense of belonging.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At 62, I’m living life on my own terms, indulging in activities that bring me joy and fulfillment. I recently embraced the exciting world of golf, and it’s been thrilling to take up a sport that challenges me physically and mentally. Traveling around the globe enriches my soul with diverse cultures and experiences, while spending quality time with my daughter and friends brings immense happiness.
Fab N Fit By Carla: A Passion Project
My brand, Fab N Fit By Carla, is a testament to my commitment to staying active and vibrant. It’s not just a business; it’s a passion project that constantly keeps me on my toes. Learning new tech skills and keeping up with social media trends is invigorating. It allows me to connect with a community of like-minded individuals across the world—people who I’ve never met in person, yet feel a genuine connection with through our shared interests.
Looking Forward to Love
While I’m currently single, I’m optimistic and open to new romantic possibilities. I believe love is just around the corner, ready to add another layer of joy to my already fulfilling life. Whether it’s through my adventures, my brand, or the connections I’ve made, I’m excited about what the future holds.
Life at 62 is vibrant, full of excitement, and exactly how I want it to be. My journey is a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue what makes you happy, whether it’s a new hobby, a business venture, or the hope of finding love.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, several qualities and skills have been pivotal in shaping who I am today and contributing to my successes and fulfillment.
Worked Past My Fears
Early in my journey, I realized that fear was a barrier I could choose to overcome. Embracing the unknown and stepping out of my comfort zone has allowed me to grow in ways I never anticipated. Whether it was starting a new venture or traveling solo, confronting fear head-on has been empowering.
Being Myself, Not Trying to Show Up as Someone Else
Authenticity has been my guiding principle. Staying true to who I am, rather than conforming to the expectations of others, has brought genuine connections into my life. It’s important to embrace your individuality and let your unique perspective shine.
Doing My Best
Consistently putting in my best effort, regardless of the task, has been crucial. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about striving for excellence in everything I do. This mindset has cultivated resilience and a sense of accomplishment.
Advice for Those Starting Their Journey
Embrace Fear as a Catalyst for Growth
Use fear as a tool for motivation rather than a reason to hold back. Each step you take beyond your fears is a step toward personal and professional growth.
Cultivate Authenticity
Embrace who you are. Your uniqueness is your strength. By being genuine, you’ll attract people and opportunities that align with your true self.
Commit to Doing Your Best
Approach every endeavor with dedication and integrity. Even when challenges arise, maintaining your commitment to excellence will guide you through.
Remember, life is short. Don’t spend too much time talking about what you want to do; instead, take action. Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. It’s through doing that we truly discover ourselves and what we’re capable of achieving.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I had just a decade left, I’d embrace it with enthusiasm and purpose. Knowing that time is precious, I’d prioritize experiences and connections that bring me joy and fulfillment.
Travel and Exploration
I envision more traveling, not just quick trips, but extended stays of a month or two, immersing myself in different cultures and truly living in new environments. This would allow for deeper experiences and a richer understanding of the world.
Health and Fitness
Exercise will remain a cornerstone of my lifestyle. Staying active is crucial not just for physical health but for mental well-being too. I’ll continue to challenge my body, perhaps trying new sports or activities that keep me engaged and invigorated.
Hosting and Family Time
I’d love to entertain more at home, creating cherished memories with family and friends. Hosting gatherings would be a wonderful way to strengthen bonds and share joy with those I care about.
Love and Companionship
Hopefully, within these ten years, I’ll find a partner to share my life with. Building a loving relationship would add a beautiful layer to my journey, enhancing the experiences of travel, home, and everyday life.
Living each day as if my clock is ticking reminds me to savor every moment and pursue what truly matters.
