Meet Carlos Martinez

We recently connected with Carlos Martinez and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Carlos with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

It all started with my dad—he was the one who first taught me what a strong work ethic meant at an early age. He used to say, “No matter if you’re cleaning toilets or wiping tables, make sure you become the best at it that you can.” He was resilient and always found motivation in everything he did. That the kind of man I aspired to become and I’m happy he was able to leave that behind for me

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a photographer who specializes in documentary style candid photos rather than posed shots. What excites me the most is capturing genuine, unscripted moments for my clients each session is unique, and I love how my work takes me to new places and experiences. My focus is on creating images that feel natural and authentic, preserving emotions and memories as they happen. I am currently switching my mind send and become more purposeful with every photo, this is to strive to tell a story through my photography.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I would say the three main qualities that helped me early on are staying motivated, staying consistent, and being open to feedback. Becoming borderline obsessed with photography definitely helped with my motivation. My biggest advice is to stay consistent and carefully analyze photos that you like. Take pictures every day no matter what it is or who it is. Just take pictures. One exercise that helped me early on was photographing the same object or scene every day while changing something each time, a different angle, different props, or anything that would alter the story the image tells. Analyzing photos you come across in the “wild” is also incredibly useful. Ask yourself why—Why do you like this photo? Why is it pleasing to look at? Why is it famous? Why did the photographer choose this composition? Most importantly, stay curious and keep creating.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My wife 1000% my wife. I’m incredibly lucky to have such an amazing person in my life who motivates me and helps me overcome any challenges. Sometimes, I get stuck wanting to perfect what I already know, but she brings fresh, out-of-the-box ideas and encourages me to try new things, even when I’m not entirely comfortable with them. She pushes me every step of the way, helping me develop new skills and discover abilities I didn’t even realize I had simply because I tend to have tunnel vision when focusing on what I want to perfect. I owe my success to her and my daughter… but mostly her (don’t tell my daughter).
