Meet Carly Giglio

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carly Giglio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Carly, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism comes from going through experiences with very different outcomes, not only successes but failures and rejection. I’ve learned that when something doesn’t work out, there’s something different coming and what’s meant for me will not pass me. I’ve been in situations where negativity effects everyone and everything. I physically can feel that, so I choose to be optimistic and positive. You get the most out of moments and situations with positivity and optimism over negativity.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been a Makeup Artist, Groomer and Educator for 15 years, based out of New York City and I didn’t start this way! I studied Fine Arts in college and majored in graphic design. I have been a painter and been fascinated with color my entire life. I remember at a very young age going into my grandmothers bathroom and sitting at her vanity playing with her makeup and looking for the brightest lipstick color I could find. As I got older, I was always the go-to person to do my friends makeup and hair for every event, dance, party, etc.

Out of college, I started working in Marketing and Graphic Design. I had a couple different roles in graphics and I learned a lot about business, design and web design. I started working at Ulta part time. That changed the entire trajectory of what was to come. There I learned so much more about makeup. I met so many people, and engaged with many different personalities and learned to train my eye for what was successful on various face shapes, eye shapes, etc. and I was able to understand what every day people were looking to achieve with their makeup and skincare.

From there I started working with some of the biggest brands like NARS, bareMinerals and Stila as an Artist & Educator. I’ve worked New York Fashion Week, beauty campaigns, celebrity clients and bridal makeup. I really love education and being able to share my knowledge with others as well as engaging with people directly.

As a Makeup Artist and Educator, I am most excited about getting to connect with people. The face is very personal and what the world sees first. As a makeup artist I love being able to help people feel their best and most confident. When someone is in my chair it’s not just a job, it’s making a genuine connection to build trust. As an educator I enjoy being able to share how approachable makeup is and the power of it.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Attention to detail Listening
Empathy

Attention to detail is key. Paying attention and awareness of products, application and technique is important in ensuring the makeup look is complete and elevated. Attention to detail also means knowing products and understanding the best products for different individuals.

Listening to the client or individual is important in helping to understand their goals. Include your expertise but you have to listen before being able to provide the best recommendations and product selections.

Empathy has helped me to connect with clients in the chair. It pairs with listening and also enables you to be more open and best understand the individual you’re working with.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I take a few deep breaths. I find a space where I can separate myself and have a moment alone and I breathe. If I am overwhelmed by tasks or things I need to get done, I make a list. That has helped me to gather and organize my thoughts as well as prioritize.
