We were lucky to catch up with Carly Tino recently and have shared our conversation below.
Carly, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I was raised in a religious culture where women were taught to play their roles and remain silent otherwise. This led me to become a professional people-pleaser. I reached a point in my early adulthood where I recognized that this way of life was not sustainable. I was squelching the woman inside of me who was clawing to get out, be free, experience life, speak up. It started with one act of bravery at a time. I am not talking about getting on a stage or signing up to skydive (although I have now done both of those things!); I am talking about the little, every day decisions: to say no, to say yes, to listen to my internal voice saying “something about this doesn’t feel right to me,” to have the courage to admit that I disagreed, to challenge “the way things were done” to pursue the way I actually wanted things to be. Slowly, over time, one small decision at a time, I built a life based on what I wanted, not what others around me wanted for me. I had to accept that people will think negative things about me, and I am okay with that. As Mel Robbins says, “Let them!” Even the people that love you will think negative thoughts about you. It’s their thoughts–let them think what they want. I learned to make decisions right as the instinct hits, not letting me feelings talk me out of it. I learned to behave as a confident woman would, and then I woke up one day and I was that woman.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when I was 18 years old. It came out of no where—I was seemingly in perfect health before that. Along with the T1D diagnosis came other diagnoses, including celiac disease, POTS, and Graves Disease (a thyroid disorder). My first semester of college, in a completely new environment surrounded by no one I knew, I made the split second decision to dive into a new community I now belonged to: the type 1 diabetes online community. I created an Instagram account @carly.with.diabetes and I started sharing my story. Over the next several years, this became my outlet for my new journey, my source of encouragement, and a springboard to new professional opportunities and even friendships.
I decided to pursue coaching, as I wanted to become someone who could help other people navigate health challenges, and use them as a reason to engage MORE in life, not less. I started my own coaching practice, where I coached individuals and families with T1D in the evenings after coming home from my full time job. In 2022, I landed a job for an extremely reputable healthcare system doing health coaching full time in multiple healthcare settings, including: diabetes education, endocrinology, integrative medicine, weight management, primary care, as well as employee wellness programs at a leading Midwest orthopedic manufacturing company. My private coaching practice, Carly Tino Coaching LLC, is thriving. I am contracted with a private integrative wellness clinic, and I continue to see individuals and families independently.
My goal is to help people go from where they are today to where they know they are capable of in the future. I am here to help you stop relying on your feelings are start making decisions based on what you KNOW will propel you forward. I teach the science of habit creation and how to hack your mind to get you unstuck so that you can engage fully with your life.
Topics we often focus on during our sessions are:
Stress management
• Screen time/technology balance
• Nutrition
• Mindful eating techniques (ditch dieting for good!)
• Hydration
• Science-backed habit formation
• Creating supportive systems and environments
• Movement (who likes the word “exercise” anyway?)
• Boundaries
• Reprioritizing yourself (“My kids all moved out…now what?”)
• Sleep
• Decluttering your home
• Creating and maintaining healthy relationships

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Stop waiting. Don’t wait to be “discovered” or have your “big break.” If you want to get your writing out there but you’re waiting for a big publisher to pick you up, stop waiting and self publish. If you want to be a public speaker but can’t find gigs that will pay you, get yourself out there and do it for free. There were several years where I was waiting around for my coaching practice to really take off. I stopped waiting and focused on continuing to take action: learning, networking, putting myself out there, getting a job that provided me the credibility to really launch my business.
2. Stop waiting for motivation to strike. It’s not going to. Or maybe it will, but not when you need it. Motivation is a scam. Take action, the motivation will follow.
3. Never stop learning. We are flooded with information from so many sources every day. Be intentional about inputting data into your brain that is inspiring, encouraging, and that pushes you forward.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. By counting down, 54321, when you know you need to do something, you quiet the feelings and thoughts that are there to talk you out of it. Alarm rings, 54321, get up. You need to speak up in a meeting, 54321, speak. I use this multiple times every single day.
