We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carmen Deleon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carmen below.
Carmen, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Optimism comes from within. It is a choice that you make every single day. It’s an opportunity to be your best, do your best, and give your best.
It’s really easy to get lost in the difficulties, challenges, and negativities of life and sometimes we do get sucked in to those dark places and that’s okay. It’s human to react and feel all moments, good and bad.
In those moments when I begin to second guess myself, or get lost in a downward spiral, or when I lose trust in my decision making, I try to remind myself that, at the end of the day, we’re all out here doing what WE know is best for ourselves. Instead of thinking that the world is out to get you, shifting your perspective and realizing all of us are all doing the best we can, makes life a little less frightening and, if anything at all, motives you to start a new day with an optimistic mindset. Also, having a community of support helps to maintain your sense of optimism.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What’s up! Im Carmen! I’m a Southern Arizona native turned Angelino of over 10 years.
I’m an actress and cook who lives happily between the worlds of food and entertainment.
I run a food pop up and dinner party experience called Capicu that celebrates Puerto Rican cuisine, which is where my family is from.
Over the last couple years, I’ve been extremely lucky to have popped up at GotYourBack in Long Beach as well as LA Homefarm in Glassell Park. I’ve also cohosted collaborative dinner parties with local artist friends where I would curate a coursed dining experience complete with drink pairings. I’ve also ventured into the world of catering, having catered a 150 person wedding in the Coachella Valley!
When I’m not cooking, you can find me self taping, hustling for those auditions, or, catch me in a Wayfair commercial or two! Slowly working to make my dreams come true. We out here trying to be the next Jessica Day in New Girl!
This new year, along with moving forward in my acting career, I’m wanting to continue to grow Capicu and pop up at other fun locations as well as host other collab dinner parties featuring local artists, small business vendors, and musicians. I love the idea of throwing a big ol’ party with your friends to help bring each other up, sharing and celebrating each others’ creative strengths, which in turn, nourishes your own creative soul.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think if I could highlight three qualities that have impacted my journey thus far, it would be the low key fear of knowing that there’s no “Plan B” to fall back on, haha, the small but mighty community of family and friends that help me keep me grounded and my head on a swivel, and my childlike ability to continue to dream big.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
ABSOLUTELY looking to connect and collaborate with other creative folks!
If you love to eat food? Let’s chat! I’ll be happy to cook for you! If you’ve never tried Comida Puertorriqueña before, hit me up! Let’s have a fiesta! If you are a Casting Director and are searching for a curly haired Latina, I’m available! If you are an artist or any creative who wants to showcase your art by hosting dinner AND a show, I’m down, let’s give ‘em a show!
