We recently connected with Carmen Spillette and have shared our conversation below.
Carmen , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I’ve always known I was a resilient person, but that quality was truly tested when my father passed away from cancer. That experience shook me to my core—but it also gave me the push I needed to finally start my business. I used my grief as fuel to move forward and create something meaningful.
In the midst of that emotional time, I poured myself into building my brand. Within six months, I had not only built a solid foundation but was also able to start monetizing. That season of my life reminded me just how powerful it can be to channel pain into purpose.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a food blogger and content creator who turned a lifelong passion into a thriving online business. After years of dreaming about it, I finally found the courage to start—and once I did, I poured everything into learning, creating, and building a brand I’m proud of. From filming and photographing recipes to developing a strong online presence, I’ve grown my business from the ground up with discipline, resilience, and a whole lot of heart.
What excites me most about what I do is being able to share approachable, flavorful recipes that bring people together. I love creating content that feels real, relatable, and inspiring—especially for busy families and home cooks looking for easy, delicious meals.
My blog, Eat With Carmen, is the heart of my brand. It’s where I share all my favorite recipes—from quick weeknight dinners to Asian-inspired comfort food—with tips to help make cooking feel fun and stress-free.
Right now, I’m focused on continuing to grow my blog, expand my reach, and create new offerings that serve my community—whether that’s through recipe development, collaborations, or exciting digital products coming soon!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful things in my journey were discipline, the willingness to learn, and resilience.
Discipline was everything—especially in the early days when I wasn’t making any money and had no idea if what I was doing would pay off. I had to stay consistent, show up every day, and treat it like a real business even when no one was watching.
The willingness to learn was also key. I took courses, watched YouTube tutorials, listened to podcasts, and just soaked up as much information as I could. There’s so much free or affordable content out there—you just have to be open and willing to do the work.
And resilience—that’s what kept me going when things felt overwhelming or discouraging. The ups and downs in content creation are real. Algorithms change, growth can be slow, and imposter syndrome creeps in. But learning how to push through those moments and not give up is what makes the biggest difference.
My advice? Be patient with yourself, stay consistent, and always be open to learning. You don’t need to have it all figured out—you just need to start and keep going. That’s how the magic happens.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My husband has been the most helpful and supportive person in my journey as an entrepreneur. From day one, he believed in me—even when I didn’t fully believe in myself. Whether it was encouraging me to take that first step, helping out with the kids so I could work late, or being my biggest cheerleader during moments of doubt, he’s been by my side through it all.
There were so many times when I felt overwhelmed or unsure, and he always reminded me of why I started. He’s been the calm in the chaos, the steady hand when I was ready to give up, and the one who celebrates every little win with me. Having someone in your corner who understands your goals and is willing to support your vision makes such a difference—especially when you’re building something from scratch.
I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without his support, encouragement, and belief in me. He’s been my partner not just in life, but in this business too—even if it’s behind the scenes.
