Meet Carol Grant

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carol Grant. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Carol, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My dad had an incredible work ethic. He came from very little, left home when he was 17, and worked morning, noon, and night to start seven different and highly successful businesses. Full of optimism and a can-do attitude, my dad never let a challenge get in the way of his vision. He taught me to work hard, be respectful of others, always go above and beyond, and never, ever, give up. My dad was extremely hospitable and loved entertaining others. We always had a houseful of guests who raved about our food and hospitality. I must have been a good student as I love hosting, cooking, entertaining, and creating a memorable experience that guests will always treasure. I’ve worked a corporate day job my entire career, but spend my free time doing what I love: blending history, service, splendid food, and all things Victorian into a unique and unforgettable experience.

When I reflect back, Dad was right: if you do what you love, it is not work.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was born an old soul and have always loved Victorian Houses, High Teas, the Victorian era, and entertaining guests. I knew a full fifteen years before we opened our first Bed and Breakfast that I would one day own my historic, Victorian Bed and Breakfast. More importantly, I knew that I wanted to open the doors wide and share my Victorian home and passion with others. Our overnight guests can expect an opulent and super comfy room with a decadent breakfast awaiting them in the morning.

With boundless enthusiasm (my husband says I have too much) I taught myself about Victorian antiques and furnishings, the Victorian lifestyle, customs, and traditions. I chose period-appropriate furnishings for our home and our guests are astonished by the grandeur of the home and opulence of the Victorian era.
I love sharing what I know about all things Victorian and am frequently asked to talk about the unique history of the home, its furnishings, Victorian customs, and meal rituals.

I’ve blended this passion with my love of entertaining to host Bridal and Baby Showers, birthday parties, weddings, and Victorian High Teas. Overnight guests can expect an opulent and super-comfy room with a decadent breakfast awaiting them in the morning. Guests attending our events will experience a grand Victorian home, lush gardens, and delicious food. In addition to private events, we’ve just begun opening our High Teas to the community, so look for upcoming announcements about dates and times.

This past year we renovated our Hydrangea guest room and guests have loved the changes! We plan to start renovating another guest room after the holidays so stay tuned!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I credit three qualities that I believe have helped me successfully launch a new business:

1. a strong work ethic
2. a good sense of humor
3. a very supportive husband

My advice to a young entrepreneur is to follow your heart and do what you love. Commit to giving everything you have and don’t get discouraged – put your head down and keep marching forward. Find a mentor. Don’t be afraid of feedback and become an expert in your field.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
This may sound counterintuitive, but my parents let me fail. Failure was important because it forced me to learn the appropriate response to a challenge, build my self-confidence when I persevered, and learn to ask others for help. I am thankful each and every day.
