Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carolina Brito. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Carolina with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My early beginnings:
When I was 10 years old, I would often visit a renowned cake lady in our neighborhood. She was famous for her delectable treats, but one particular dessert caught my attention: the sweet Italian meringue. I was enchanted by its smooth texture and the way it melted in my mouth, releasing a sweet vanilla flavor.
My curiosity and expectations:
My fascination with the sweet Italian meringue led me to ask the cake lady about her secret recipe. She would smile and say, “It’s all about the technique and the quality of the ingredients.” This sparked my curiosity, and I began experimenting with different recipes and techniques in my own mini-bakery at home.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Through experimentation, I developed essential skills in measurement, texture, and flavor combination. I learned the importance of precision, patience, and persistence in baking. The cake lady’s feedback and guidance helped me refine my skills and motivated me to continue improving.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
-Patience & Precision
Baking is a science. Unlike cooking, where you can improvise, baking requires precision in measurements, timing, and technique. It also takes patience—whether waiting for dough to rise or perfecting a skill over time.
-Understanding Ingredients & Techniques
Knowing how ingredients interact (like why butter should be cold for flaky pastries or why yeast needs warm water) gives you control over the final product. Mastering techniques like kneading, folding, and proofing is key to consistent results.
-Creativity & Passion for Baking
Baking isn’t just about following recipes—it’s an art. Passion fuels perseverance, and creativity allows you to develop your own unique flavors and styles. Whether it’s decorating cakes or inventing a new pastry, this is what makes baking truly enjoyable.
Bake with love—the best baked goods always come from passion and joy.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
When it comes to making a recipe and honoring it, challenges are inevitable. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things don’t go as planned, cakes sink, dough doesn’t rise, or textures aren’t quite right. In those moments, frustration can easily take over, making us feel helpless.
But baking, at its core, is an act of love and patience. Instead of letting negativity take control, it’s important to shift our mindset. Rather than saying, “This is a failure,” say, “This is a lesson.” Every mistake teaches us something, maybe the butter was too soft, the oven temperature needed adjusting, or an extra few minutes of kneading would have made all the difference.
The key is focus; focusing not on the frustration, but on the process. Baking is a journey, not just a final product. When things don’t go right, take a deep breath, analyze what went wrong, and try again, this time with more patience, understanding, and love. Because in the end, the most important ingredient in any recipe isn’t just flour or sugar, it’s the passion and perseverance behind it.
