We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carolina Peralta López. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carolina below.
Hi Carolina, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Since I was a child, I have seen my parents work hard to give the best to my sister and me; despite everything, they never neglected us and instilled in us the best education they could, the best habits and the best values, among them optimism.
Despite the circumstances that surrounded us, possibly economic instability, a crisis that hit the state where I lived in my childhood, and the possibility of finding the best food to nourish our family, my mother and father did their best. My childhood in the city where I grew up was full of adversity; however, despite the difficult circumstances, my mother and father always taught us to stay optimistic; my mother used to say: “Life is like a garden; you have to water it and take care of it to grow and flourish, always work for your dreams and you will manage to make them grow.”
As I grew up, I realized the power of optimism in my life, from small things to very important moments in making decisions.
In my current job, I carry out the value of optimism daily, always looking to improve my country.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am Carolina Peralta López, a nutritionist specializing in pediatrics. I am proudly Mexican. My career as a nutrition professional is driven by my desire to improve lives and my deep commitment to my country and its future generations.
Mexico faces one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world, second only to the United States. This alarming statistic inspired me to focus my career on the well-being of the very young. I firmly believe and remain optimistic that educating and supporting mothers, children and adolescents in adopting healthy eating habits is key to eradicating disease and building a healthier future.
Nutrition during childhood is crucial. Children need a wide range of nutrients to develop properly, and poor nutrition can lead to problems such as overweight, obesity, and long-term chronic conditions. As a pediatric nutritionist, my mission is to ensure that children receive the proper nutrition for optimal development, preventing health complications from the earliest stages of life.
In addition, I know that the family plays a key role in children’s healthy eating. Eating habits are formed in the home, and when all family members adopt conscious eating, it creates a positive environment that benefits the little ones. My approach not only includes the children but also the parents and caregivers because together, we can make significant changes.
My motivation comes not only from my professional vocation but also from my personal experience and the optimism I inject into my work daily. My husband was one of my first supporters on the road to a healthy lifestyle. We have learned that education and information are the most potent life-saving tools. As a mother, I understand firsthand the importance of establishing special nutrition from pregnancy through adolescence, and I know that change begins at home.
Trust me to guide you on this journey to balanced, mindful eating. Whether you’re looking to improve your child’s health or prevent future problems, I’m committed to giving you the knowledge and tools you need to achieve your goals.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
3 key points would be:
1.- Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically: Communicating optimistically and understandably with parents and children helps them understand the importance of nutrition and find solutions to nutritional problems.
2.- Up-to-date knowledge: As a Pediatric Nutritionist, it is important to stay current on the latest research and recommendations on the health of the pregnant mother and infant.
3. Ability to think creatively: Finding innovative solutions and thinking creatively are key to the health of children and families.
The beginning of something important will always be difficult, but I think that recognizing the important thoughts is first. Sometimes, changing perspective can help us see things with optimism. Surrounding yourself with people who encourage you to achieve what you want in your environment is the best. Being patient with what we propose will make us see the results we want.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Yes, whenever I see around me, I can always find children with eating problems, usually obesity. Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem that can lead to serious issues such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. In addition, childhood obesity can affect the self-esteem and mental health of children and adolescents.
It is extremely important for me to maintain optimism about change in the patients I see in my practice. Addressing this problem by promoting healthy habits and a balanced diet in pregnant women, children, and adolescents is fundamental.
