We recently connected with Carolina Sanchez-Hervas and have shared our conversation below.
Carolina, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care is so important, and over the years, I have found that to be even more true. I start my day with meditation before looking at my phone or computer. This helps me get centered before being bombarded with information. It makes a big difference and I feel calmer going into my work day.
Feeding my body with good, healthy food is also very important to me. I became plant-based 12 years ago and I’ve received so many benefits from this lifestyle. When I made the switch, I immediately felt more energy and eating this way allows me to have a more productive work day too. Digestion requires a significant amount of energy, so that’s why when you eat a heavy meal, you feel very tired afterwards. I always make time for preparing my own meals, and sitting down and enjoying them, too.
Finally, I like to incorporate some form of exercise into my day. Whether it’s going for a walk in the morning or finishing my day with yoga, taking the time to exercise helps me stay balanced.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I feel lucky to be part of this dynamic city and contribute to its multicultural population with my passion for languages. A couple of years ago, we expanded our service offering from traditional translation services and started offering language lessons in a few languages, like German and Spanish. Our clients love being able to learn from anywhere with their language instructors. I think learning a new language is so exciting, and it’s something I do every day. It opens so many doors, creates new opportunities and gives you confidence, not to mention, it facilitates travel overseas.
We specialize in legal translations and financial translations for companies, as well as translations for individuals. On the corporate side, we translate many legal documents for law firms and documents for financial institutions. We also help many individuals translate immigration documents, translate documents for USCIS purposes and translate documents for foreign embassies.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, languages and kindness. I have always been very perseverant and if you want to start your own business, you must be. It is a journey, after all, so you have to be in it for the long haul. Second, being fluent in several languages has given me the ability to communicate with many clients and understand what is needed to provide a culturally relevant, accurate translation. Whatever your industry is, it is important to master all of the knowledge you can about it. Finally, it is important to be kind. You will not go far in your business (or in life, for that matter) if you are not kind to others. A little bit goes a long way.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Going back to my first response, I think self-care is so important. It’s necessary to take a break sometimes and reset, even if it is just for five minutes of breathing. Breathwork and meditation are great for combatting any kind of stress, and the more you do it, the better you get at it. Just as we train our bodies, we need to train our minds and the more you do this kind of work, the easier it gets and the more you reap the benefits. Anyone can do it, and you can do it from anywhere.
It’s also important to find some kind of exercise that you enjoy that helps you let go of stress. However, I do not recommend taking out stress by engaging in a hard workout. This can lead to injuries. Everyone is different, so you just need to find the right balance for yourself.
Finally, the power of positive thinking is so important. Our bodies respond to the way we talk to ourselves. If you are feeling overwhelmed and keep repeating negative thoughts to yourself, the body absorbs that negativity and you will feel it on a physical and emotional level. Try to replace the negative with positive statements and the more you do this, the easier and more automatic it will become.
