Caroline, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?

I developed my communication skills through years of leading both people and projects—first as a Director of Operations and later as the CEO of my own marketing agency. Early on, I learned that clear, thoughtful communication can make or break a team’s success. I’ve spent years refining how to translate complex ideas into actionable direction, how to listen deeply before responding, and how to adapt my message for different audiences, whether it’s a designer, a client, or a community partner.

Running a creative agency has also shaped my ability to communicate visually and emotionally, not just verbally. Every brand we build is essentially a conversation between a business and its audience, and that lens has helped me approach communication as both an art and a system.

Ultimately, I think my effectiveness comes from genuine curiosity and empathy. I care about understanding where people are coming from, what they’re trying to achieve, and how I can make things clearer, simpler, and more inspiring.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m the owner and CEO of Lawson House, a boutique marketing and design agency based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We help service-based small businesses build brands that truly feel like them. Our work spans brand strategy, website design, and ongoing marketing, but what really sets us apart is the level of care we bring to every project. We believe marketing shouldn’t feel like chaos; it should feel like clarity, momentum, and partnership.

Over the years, I’ve developed a deep passion for helping entrepreneurs move from overwhelm to confidence. That’s what led to Launch38, our express brand, website, and messaging program that delivers everything a business needs to launch (or relaunch) in one week. It’s been incredible to see how much transformation happens when people finally see their vision come to life and realize that marketing doesn’t have to take months to make an impact.

What excites me most right now is how our work is expanding beyond traditional agency walls. We’re leaning into local community building through projects like the Small Business Support Crew, a campaign celebrating local entrepreneurs, and exploring new ways to bring business owners together both online and in person.

At the end of the day, my focus is simple: helping real people do real things for their business. Whether that’s designing a brand from scratch, creating an entire campaign, or mentoring new business owners, everything we do at Lawson House is about helping people feel seen, supported, and proud of the work they’re putting into the world.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities that have shaped my journey the most are authenticity, clarity, and consistency.

Authenticity has always been my anchor. In the early days of running a business, it’s easy to think you need to sound a certain way or follow someone else’s blueprint for success. But the moment I stopped trying to look “professional” and started showing up as myself—in my leadership, in my brand voice, and in how I connected with clients—everything changed. People can feel when you’re being real, and that builds a kind of trust you can’t fake. My advice: pay attention to what feels aligned, not just what looks good from the outside.

Clarity is what keeps everything moving forward. Whether it’s communicating expectations with my team or simplifying a client’s message, I’ve learned that clarity is a form of kindness. It creates space for better decisions, better work, and better relationships. For anyone starting, slow down long enough to define what success actually looks like for you, and communicate that clearly.

And finally, consistency is what creates momentum. Growth doesn’t happen overnight; it happens in the small, steady actions that build trust over time. You don’t have to show up perfectly, just keep showing up with integrity and intention.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

Our ideal client is a business owner who genuinely cares about their work, their clients, and the experience they create. They’re usually small-to-mid-sized service-based businesses like med spas, home service companies, wellness brands, or interior designers who have outgrown the DIY stage and are ready to elevate how they show up.

What makes them ideal isn’t their size or industry, it’s their mindset. They value partnership, trust the process, and want to build something that lasts. They’re not just looking for a pretty logo or website; they want clarity in their message, confidence in their marketing, and a brand that truly reflects who they are.

The best relationships we have are with clients who show up honestly, collaborate openly, and believe in what they do. When we combine their passion with our strategy and creativity, the results are always stronger and often, a lot more fun.
