We were lucky to catch up with Caroline Nyakundi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caroline, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
When I was six, I was sent to a distant boarding school, which was initially very challenging. I quickly learned to protect my belongings, stand up for myself, and take care of myself. Though I struggled with Chemistry and Physics, I excelled in subjects that interested me, which built my confidence. Moving to America after high school, I became independent, got a job, bought a car, and realized I could achieve my goals. This journey of self-reliance and success greatly boosted my confidence and self-esteem.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Being a massage therapist is deeply fulfilling because it involves forming meaningful connections with clients, making a tangible difference in their well-being, and using your touch to provide comfort and relief. The profession encourages personal growth, fosters empathy, and allows for a holistic approach to health. Each session offers a chance to creatively tailor treatments, contributing to a profound sense of purpose and satisfaction.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Empathy and Communication: Understanding and connecting with clients on an emotional and physical level is crucial. This helps in tailoring treatments to their specific needs and building trust.
Advice for Development: Practice active listening and open-ended questioning to better understand client needs and concerns. Regularly seek feedback from clients to improve communication. Engaging in workshops or training on emotional intelligence can also be beneficial.
Technical Proficiency: Mastery of various massage techniques and a solid understanding of anatomy are essential for effectively addressing different issues and providing high-quality treatments.
Advice for Development: Continuously expand your knowledge through advanced courses and certifications. Regularly practice and refine your techniques and stay updated on new developments in massage therapy and anatomy. Hands-on practice and mentorship from experienced therapists can also accelerate your learning.
Self-Care and Resilience: Maintaining your own physical and emotional well-being is vital to sustain a long and successful career. The job can be physically demanding and emotionally intense.
Advice for Development: Establish a self-care routine that includes regular exercise, proper ergonomics, and mindfulness practices. Take breaks and seek support when needed to avoid burnout. Learning stress management techniques and setting boundaries can help maintain resilience.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I have been learning how to be a successful businessperson by managing business finances, client booking, negotiate leases, train and employ additional therapists .
