We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Carolyn Demps a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolyn , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
Not sure where to start, how it all started or how it all happened, but I learned at a very young age that I was not going to settle nor would I take No for an answer. This mindset was just the beginning of my ability to become a Risk Taker in life.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a young African American Woman growing up with a strong family foundation, as well as a very large support system, it taught me that there was absolutely nothing that I could not do if I put my mind and thoughts to it. ‘That being said, I took every risk in life that presented itself to me. Starting with my first job at the age of 16 in the food industry working my way up into a manager’s position at a very young age while attending high school and college. Fast forward to my adult life finding my passion and love for fast cars and wanting to learn more about automotive products. This led to my career of 36 years in the Automotive/Insurance industry. During my years of gaining experience in this industry, I took a leap of faith and became a full time Entrepreneur/Franchise owner of a very successful Appraisal Company for several years. This position in life truly expanded my career and gave me the ability to hire the best team of professionals in the industry. With my mindset focused on longevity, I stepped out on faith yet again and invested in real estate in 2005. Although it had its ups and downs, I trusted myself being the risk taker that I am, I put my heart and soul into making it work for almost 20 years. Needless to say I am extremely happy with my decision to never give up.
By taking all of the risks I have taken in life, it has made me the Strong Woman I am today and I am forever grateful! Would not change one thing about any of the decisions I have made throughout the years and look forward to more opportunities life has to offer.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Stay Focused! Stay On Course! Keep Winning! These are the 3 main things I have learned as a Entrepreneur. If you are determined to step out on faith, you have to know in your heart this is what I want, this is what I need, I will do all things to succeed.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I take a step back, re-evaluate the situation and circumstances I am facing, regroup and dive back in with new ideas and being creative. Quitting is not an option but it is a choice you have to make. Be strong, dig your heels in deeper and come up with the master plan to Win!
