We caught up with the brilliant and insightful CAROLYN SCARBOROUGH a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
CAROLYN, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Love this question. Honestly, one of the biggest things that helped me—and it’s something people don’t always discuss—is self-talk.
Over the years, I’ve learned to be more kind to myself, whether things go “well” or not. Instead of criticizing myself and reinforcing the false belief that “I’m not worthy,” I try to speak compassionate, understanding words to myself.
I pay attention to what thoughts are coming up and try to make space for all parts of me—even the messy, awkward, or uncomfortable ones.
My confidence hasn’t grown because I’ve become a wildly successful entrepreneur or human being… it’s grown because I’ve cultivated deep acceptance and respect for myself, regardless of outcomes.
I also believe the truth of who I am is limitless, creative, full of possibility, and open-hearted. Anything else is simply what clouds that intrinsic nature. That’s what I try to return to again and again. That’s where my confidence lives.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I believe deeply in the creative power of women and that our voices are urgently needed in the world today. I help women unblock their creative potential, sparking aliveness and inspired movement. From that fresh, fertile place, we can create anything—books that matter, heart-led businesses, or a more vibrant, purpose-filled next chapter. When we return home to our innate creativity, we all rise.
So often, we don’t give ourselves permission to “do the thing.” We get caught up in to-do lists, caretaking, and the self-talk that whispers, “It’s too late,” “I’ll never figure out how to begin,” or “It doesn’t matter.”
In the Creative Soul Community, we support women in many ways: through private coaching, creativity and writing retreats, and Creativity Crawls™ in the Austin, Texas area, where we spark inspiration and rediscover wonder on city streets.
My signature program, Creatrix Unleashed: Reclaim Your Life and Creative Power, is a 3-month transformational journey for women ready to reclaim their creative spark. Each woman arrives with a unique creative goal—whether it’s writing, launching a new idea, or simply making space for what matters—and leaves with a deeper connection to herself, renewed confidence, and a toolkit of practices that support joyful forward motion. Along the way, she learns to quiet the inner critic, follow creative flow over perfection, and trust that even small steps can open bold new paths.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Stay Curious
Curiosity is the doorway to creativity. It might start as a quiet “What if?”— What if this poem became a collage? What if I let myself follow the weird idea instead of the “right” one? What if I ran my business more like a retreat than a hustle? Curiosity leads you out of the known and into the mystery—where magic happens.
Each question leads to another: “What would happen if I tried taking photos at sunrise?” leads to “What if I did this every day for a month?” Before you know it, you’re on a creative journey. When curiosity fades, we lose momentum—but at any moment, you can ask a new question and reignite your spark.
2. Lead with Authenticity, Not Comparison
When I first started out 20 years ago, I stressed about competition. But I realized that when your brand is truly YOU—tinsel in your hair, spontaneous dance parties and all—there’s no competition. Your people will find you.
Years ago, I attended a writing circle run by someone with a similar focus. Her tone was serious, directive, and with the belief in no pain, no gain. My people, by contrast, crave safety, creating with joy, deep dives, and laughter. I even helped promote her work because I knew the right people would gravitate to each of us. Authenticity eliminates competition.
3. Build Your Community
One of my superpowers is attracting soulful, creative women into meaningful community. As a solopreneur, I desired a group that I wanted to be a part of. My communities are filled with curious, open-hearted, exploratory, willing to be imperfect women who prioritize the adventure of the creative journey over the product.
At first, I thought I was just lucky attracting these women. But now I understand: your community reflects your values. If you live and transmit those values, your people will find you—and bring their friends!
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
The women who come to my retreats and programs rock! They’re often at a life stage where they understand that prioritizing creative time for themselves isn’t selfish, but the most life-affirming thing they can do. And in a world that pushes constant productivity, they instead choose to nourish their souls, expand their joy, and claim their power.
That’s revolutionary.
So if you’re ready to get unstuck and feel fully alive in your creative life, we’d love to welcome you. Your voice and vision matter—now more than ever.
