We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carrington Chatman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carrington below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Carrington with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I developed my work ethic at a young age, surrounded by honest, stand-up individuals who raised me. My parents, both with military backgrounds, instilled in me the importance of discipline and commitment early on. They wore many hats, and seeing them juggle responsibilities and maintain balance taught me resilience and adaptability.
My grandparents were also heavily involved in the church and took care of the neighborhood garden, showing me the value of community service and dedication. Even in my neighborhood, I was inspired by movers and shakers who always admired my hustle—from cutting grass as a kid to managing my athletic career. That natural hustler’s instinct was ingrained in me since I could walk. It’s one of the best skills my village ever taught me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Carrington Chatman, and I’m the owner of Carrington Financials, an independent insurance brokerage based in Akron, Ohio. I was born and raised here in Akron and graduated from Copley High School. I went on to earn a scholarship to play football at Walsh University, where I was fortunate to be introduced to an internship that truly set the foundation for my professional journey.
Growing up in Akron, playing sports, and experiencing different school environments shaped the person and business owner I am today. Carrington Financials was founded in my hometown with a mission to provide comprehensive insurance solutions to individuals and businesses. We offer a wide range of services, including life, health, business, personal, auto, and home insurance.
What’s special about what I do is the ability to help families protect what’s most important to them and guide them toward creating generational wealth. I take great pride in building relationships with my clients and ensuring that they feel secure and supported every step of the way.
Our company is deeply rooted in the community. As we continue to grow, we’re excited to expand our contributions to the neighborhood through events, education, and outreach programs. It’s about more than just insurance; it’s about being a trusted partner in helping people build and preserve their legacies.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are: belief and perseverance, heart, and the ability to recognize and adapt.
First, belief and perseverance. Even though I’ve always been talented, it doesn’t mean I always got my way or that people always believed in me. That’s why it’s crucial to believe in yourself first. When you get your opportunity, make sure you leave an impression so strong that people will remember you—and maybe even regret ever doubting you. Whether it’s physically, mentally, or spiritually, show them you’re great.
Second, you have to have heart. You need a fighting spirit—a sense of resilience and grit to navigate this world. If you don’t, the universe will have its way with you. But on the other side of that fighting spirit is compassion. The good book teaches us to choose the preacher with the right heart, because even if he’s not the most skillful, his heart will carry him forward. I apply that same thinking in my decision-making: lead with compassion, and the skills will catch up.
Lastly, recognition and adaptability. How quickly can you recognize a situation, a problem, an environment—and then adapt while still staying true to yourself? That’s what separates you from everyone else. I developed this skill playing safety in football. As the last line of defense, you see the whole field, and you have to adjust and react in real time. You’re responsible for making up for other people’s mistakes and still getting the job done. Those lessons have been invaluable for me and have allowed me to stand out from my peers.
My advice to those early in their journey is simple: believe in yourself, fight with heart, lead with compassion, and stay adaptable. It’ll take you far.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My faith and my family—my support system—have given me every attribute I’ve needed to accomplish whatever I set my mind to. Many people overlook the Bible as a business guide, but it’s filled with passages and messages that you can apply to your everyday life, including in business. One of my favorite verses is Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV):
“For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
This verse confirms that our road to success is already mapped out. We just have to continue to trust Him through the good and the bad turns along the way, because every turn is a lesson to make us better.
My family has also played a huge role in shaping who I am. They instilled these practices and this faith in me from a young age. They put me in positions to showcase my talents, but more importantly, they trained me along the way so I wouldn’t fold under pressure. Their support and guidance have been invaluable in helping me build the skills, qualities, and mindset I needed to succeed.
