We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cartrell Daniels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Cartrell with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from my parents. My pops has always been a natural hustler. Since I was young I can remember him making me work in some kind of capacity whether it was helping maintain a clean home or assisting him with a work project. Same goes for my mom as she always maintained the home and worked full time herself. So I was always inspired to work and earn my own way. Never expected anything to be given to me. That has helped me out tremendously.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been acting and doing music production for about 11 years now. Everything from kids theatre to film and commercials. I have always loved the feeling of expressing myself through different characters and being on camera. It kind of goes hand in hand with music production as I often feel a natural high while making beats and figuring out piano melodies. I make everything from trap beats to lofi tracks. Doing both has kind of kept things fresh for me as I don’t typically feel burn out from one or the other. As of late I’ve also taken up the title of music curator as I run a growing lofi music playlist called LoFi and Wine on Spotify, YouTube, Tidal and Apple Music. The major thing I’m focused on right now is becoming a better actor and producer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that helped me early in my journey and continue to help me now are patience, consistency, and short memory. No matter what kind of business you’re trying to launch if you don’t have patience you are going to fail 95 percent of the time. if you don’t have the grit to be consistent, have a short memory when it comes to people telling you no its going to be tuff. being an actor I have learned that the hard way. You have to go through lots of No’s for a Yes at times. If I was early in my journey thats the one thing I would try and develop, thick skin.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Most impactful thing my parents did for me was allowing me to be creative and supporting my decisions once I went all in with acting and music production. I know deep down they wanted me to get regular employment however they believed in me enough to let me go at it and supported whenever they could.
