We were lucky to catch up with Caryn Isaacs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caryn, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
“If you want those red shoes, you will have to ask the salesman.” My mother had always gotten me everything I wanted, but here was a dilemma. I had never even spoken to a stranger. Who should I ask? What should I say? I looked around, tears starting to sting my eyes and saw a man who was carrying a bunch of shoe boxes. I waited until he put them down next to a girl who looked a lot older than me. I wanted the red strapped shoes so bad that I decided to do whatever it took. I marched up to him, carrying the sample that I knew was way too big for me and said, “I want to try on these red shoes in my size please.” He looked at me with a big smile. “Certainly, miss. Have a seat.” I sat a few chairs down from the older girl, no where near my mother who was ignoring me, helping my brother pick out our once a year new school shoes. It felt like forever. I wondered if he understood me. Then there he was, holding the familiar shoe measuring thing. He kneeled down in front of me, took off my old brown shoes and measured one foot at a time. First the length and then the width. “Size 2 miss, I will be right back.” he said as he jumped away heading to the open door to where I figured my shoes would be waiting. Sure enough, he was now heading to me, with a beautiful white box that had a black picture of the shoes and next to it size 2m. The man kneeled down in front of me again and opened the box. There they were. The shoes of my dreams. The man slipped them on my stocking feet. They fit perfectly, just like Cinderella. “I’ll take them.” He took them off and put them back in the box, then he handed me the box. “They’ll be up at the register when you’re ready”, he said as he walked off to help someone else. I learned a big lesson that day. If I want something, all I have to do is ask.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
When people say you can’t do what you love and should give it up, I say they don’t know what to do.
I’ve started hundreds of healthcare businesses for others and ran several multi-million-dollar companies. I now use my experience and creativity to walk the path with successful entrepreneurs who are struggling with the effects of aging.
If you can’t do everything the way you did in your 30s, but you still want to continue your business, start a new one, write your memoirs, or travel through your bucket list, I find out-of-the-box solutions to what’s holding you back. I am your alter ego who throws off the stereotypes imposed by your children, the media, and your fear of the unknown.
My love of theater and music brings me into contact with vibrant people. When I am asked to speak to professional organizations, such as a medical conference or a group of Tax Attorneys, I get them up doing improv and singing their own lyrics to the Aging Icon melody.
Nurses and doctors are burning out from the health system’s many limitations on their autonomy. I show them how they can recapture their love of helping people. This is a win for them and a win for the people who are desperately seeking healthcare solutions.
The books, Aging Icon and Aging Icon Volume 2 are real life stories of people who found untraditional ways to follow their passion regardless of age or health. You can see me on all social media platforms and many podcasts, including The Sudden Widow Coach and The Myth Slayer Cafe.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Most people who say they are advocates for aging people are talking about one or a few experiences. I have decades of accomplishment starting as a dental educator, health insurance executive and health practice management consultant. As an entrepreneur, I participated in taking a company public, selling a franchise and starting a health insurance company. I built a multi-million dollar direct marketing business. I then pivoted into patient advocacy for successful people aging alone. I was able to use this experience to create a legacy business doing what I love best, speaking and coaching vibrant people while making a difference in the world.
If you are starting out, or looking to transform into your best self, I want you to be yourself, because you can’t be anyone else. Dream BIG! Start with doing your homework to complete a true SWOT analysis before deciding on your business model, marketing plan or pricing. Don’t let anyone tell you that it can’t be done.
