Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Casey Cromwell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Casey, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I think one of the funny parts about having an autoimmune disease like celiac disease is that you know the only thing tough enough to kick your own butt is yourself. Being diagnosed with multiple chronic illnesses in my adolescence and teens wasn’t easy, but it forced me to learn from an early age just how strong I am and how much I can overcome.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Casey and I was diagnosed with celiac disease at 17 during my senior year of high school. I was terrified how I would manage to eat gluten free in college only a few months later, and was disappointed to find only a couple resources online from students who were actually in college with celiac disease. So I decided to start a blog and social media on that topic, and to my surprise, am still sharing gluten free resources online over 11 years later.
I feel extremely fortunate to get to share new gluten free products and store round ups, easy recipes, celiac humor and more with millions of gluten free eaters every week using my social media platforms. Celiac disease can feel extremely isolating, so it is also helpful for me to know I’m not alone going through common celiac struggles (or celebrating gluten free wins!) I’m most active on Instagram and TikTok, both at @collegeceliackc.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the most impactful three qualities that allowed me to get to where I am today is: 1) a willingness to learn, 2) curiosity, 3) dedication. Almost everything I know about marketing, social media, video editing and other technical social media skills have been learned from trial and error on my own or in various marketing positions I have worked over the past decade. It’s easy to feel intimidated by new social media platforms or apps, but being open to learn and curious enough to experiment with different kinds of content, editing styles, etc has helped me find what content resonates most with my audience. But at the same time, you have to be dedicated enough to keep trying even when experiments fail or algorithms change, etc or else you will give up when life or your job gets hard.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents did for me was to wholeheartedly support my celiac diagnosis and educate themselves on how to safely feed me and make our family home a safe place for me even when I visit today. I’ve heard many horror stories from others with celiac whose family are not supportive, and I think seeing the lengths my parents were willing to go to help me live a healthy, delicious gluten free life also helped me set standards for future partners and friends to care for me in the same way.
