Meet Casey Gomez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Casey Gomez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Casey , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I know I speak for all of us when I say that music is our creative outlet and means of self expression. Personally, I keep my creativity alive by being active in many hobbies. Having several creative outlets helps keep my mind at ease and open to new opportunities. I am constantly trying to find ways to apply my creative instinct and drive. Sharing the creative experience with others and learning from others is my favorite method to keep the juices flowing.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am Casey Gomez, the Frontman, vocalist, writer and Harmonica player for CFG & The Family, a Blues, Soul Funk/Rock band out of Hamilton Ohio. This is my story:
I’ve been involved with music for over 30 years. My Step-father was a local blues musician in a band called “The Carp Brothers” in the 70’s-80’s where he sang, played bass and harmonica. I guess I kind of learned by osmosis and I just started playing every instrument that was laying around the house. I played bass in many cover bands and a few original bands that made little traction, the experiences in those bands provided a stable foundation for my knowledge of music and the music business. In 2012, I was playing bass in a local band and my wife Angela became sick with ovarian cancer. I took a break from the band to assist with her care and we spend about six months in and out of the hospital for cancer treatment. It was a dark time of sadness as I watched the love of my life deteriorate. I turned to writing music and writing lyrics as a form of my grief. After Angela passed away in 2013, I returned to my bandmates with what I had written, but I expressed that I had to sing. It was the first time I had ever sang in a band. I had a message, I had feelings to express and grief to explore. Three bands later, The Magic Lightnin’ Boys, The North Second Crew and now CFG & The Family and I’ve been writing and singing ever since, aligned with some of the area’s best talent and amazing friends and chosen family. CFG & The Family made it to the 2024 International Blues Challenge as finalists, where we landed in the top 4 of over 300 blues bands in the world. We have also recently won 2025 “Best Local Original Band” of Cincinnati City Beat Readers poll and 2025 Butler County’s Best Local Band.
Our guitar player Mason Johnson has won many accolades this past year and I look forward to watching his talent grow and creating amazing music with him. Pete Davidson on drums is a master at his craft and he holds a wealth of knowledge of music and life in general, he’s an amazing human. Greg Skinner on the bass, holds down our foundation and keeps us grounded, always optimistic and caring he is a unique soul who contributes soo much to our music. Roughly three years in the making, and we are currently working on our second album which will be released on all streaming platforms. The music ranges from stompy blues, to soulful gospel jams. Its feel-good music, focused on positive vibes. I am excited for what the future holds for us and feel extremely blessed to be associated with such great musicians and friends on this wild journey.
We are scheduled to play many local shows around the Hamilton/Cincinnati area and our goal is to branch out to the surrounding states and music centers.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

First , I imagine that learning from many of my musical influences; being that, family, friends, peers and heroes. So maybe, just listening and being open to learning and being accessible and focused on absorbing as much knowledge as possible. Second, learning to compromise and share the experience. Its not always about “you” and it can’t always be “your way”, you have to let others share the space and stand in the light, no matter the situation. Third, we have a song called “Recognize the moment”, and I think that is soo important to it all. Acknowledge what is going on around you, read the room and save the experiences to replay in your mind so that you can build upon it. Not to get too deep, but I’m generalizing my music experiences, and this all applies to life decisions as well. All of these qualities or skills have provided me with success and they have helped me on my journey.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

We are looking to collaborate with music venues, booking agents, other bands to swap gigs and play out with and we always enjoy having guest musicians sit in with us as long as we have chemistry. Anyone interested in connecting with us can reach us through our Facebook page or email us directly at cfgandthefamily@gmail.com.
