We recently connected with Casey & Gregor Macpherson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Casey & Gregor, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

We are both Gen X and older than a lot of people in our field. We had older parents who were of the Silent Generation. A lot can be said about what’s wrong about that generation and its parenting style, but it has served us well. The very basic fundamental principle of you get what you work for was instilled early. Gregor grew up in Scotland, and I grew up in Oklahoma, but we had very similar upbringings. Captain John Smith’s quote “He that will not work, shall not eat” was quoted to us on both sides of the Atlantic. We see other, younger, owners in our field give up after a couple years. A part of me admires their ability to adapt and move in a different occupational direction but the bigger part wants to work even harder. It has taken us a while to settle into a better work life balance. Although, our default mode is learn more about our field and to keep taking it to the next level. We also like to push each other which is actually fun!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

We met in Scotland where I saw Gregor and his Border Terrier, Monty, on a walk. I was obsessed and was able to adopt both of them! They moved to Oklahoma where we decided to buy a Fastsigns store. It was an adventure for sure. Franchises get a bad rap, but we are a locally owned and operated store. A real mom-and-pop store, we really get to know our customers and get the benefits of Fastsigns marketing. It also gives us a real chance to help the community. We are growing at an amazing rate and don’t seem to be slowing down a bit.
We chose to support The Demand Project. TDP exists to eradicate child trafficking, online enticement, child sexual abuse material, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children. We have had an amazing journey providing them with signage and support.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

We are both VERY stubborn. If you tell us we can’t achieve something, we will problem solve until we get it. Gregor was a police officer, and I was a high school teacher. Moving into the private sector into an industry we knew nothing about was probably not wise. We were forced to learn an entirely new vocabulary. It was like getting a degree in a new field. We rolled up our sleeves and learned the whole business. We are still learning! Our advice to others is to take the time to learn the industry. Let others in the industry help you and don’t be discouraged by those who don’t want to help you. Optimism goes a long way!

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Doing exactly what we are doing now. Being grateful for our family and employees, finding purpose in daily work, and travelling back to Scotland a couple times a year for vacation.
