We recently connected with Casey Ricciardone and have shared our conversation below.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Casey Ricciardone and I own Casey’s Greenhouses. I grow tropicals, hibiscus, gingers, orchids, bromeliads & other exotic plants, indoor and outdoor. I sell my plants at markets, to several garden shops, and to landscapers. I’ve been growing plants since I was a kid and always had a passion for nature. After running a landscaping company for 13 years, I decided it was time to turn this love of growing plants into a business and I couldn’t be happier. I get to spend most of my day around beautiful plants and flowers and they bring me so much joy. A joy that I get to spread to others who buy my plants. That is my main purpose, to spread that joy to others through the plants that I care for and love. I love to see people’s excitement when they find one of my plants that they have to take home. I share in that excitement. That excitement is why I love going to ‘work’.
Next market: We will be at Plantasia on April 27th from 8am to 2pm. 720 Magnolia Rd. Charleston, SC 29407
Magnolia Park and Community Gardens
Plantasia is one of the biggest plant markets in Charleston. If you haven’t been, it’s worth going to!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Passion, Resilience & Courage! Passion: The passion will drive the business and promote the business. The passion for whatever you are doing is what fuels creation. It fuels your creation & expansion of whatever business you are in. If you are passionate about what you are doing, it speaks for itself. People feel your passion & want to support that and if you are passionate about your work, it won’t be ‘work’ anymore.
Resilience: There will be challenges along the way, but the quicker you can bounce back physically and mentally, the quicker the problem will be resolved and a thing of the past.
The passion you have for whatever you are doing, will strengthen your resilience. Do not give up, even when it seems too hard to keep going. There’s always a way out and always a solution.
Courage: Have the courage to take the leap into whatever venture you desire. The universe supports courage and when you take the leap, know that you will be supported even though you have no idea how it will turn out. Stay positive & it will turn out better than you ever thought. Have the courage to take the leap, whether it’s starting a new business, expanding, transitioning into something different, whatever it is, take the next step & the doors will fly open.
One of the things I had to learn as well on my journey of a business owner is to ask for help when you need it. This is so important. Even the most put together, well organized people need help sometimes. We aren’t here to do everything all by ourselves and everyone needs help from time to time. Asking for help at any point in anyone’s journey should always be encouraged. We are all here to help each other through this journey of life.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my father did for me was introducing me to plants at a very young age and teaching me how to care for them. He is why I have a passion for nature and love growing plants. He ‘planted the seed’ so to speak and it’s grown into one of my biggest joys in life. The most impactful thing my mother did for me was to instill a positive attitude and strong work ethic. She told me that things will always work out for the best and instilled a positive attitude that is always with me. She is an example of a strong work ethic that my siblings and I follow. A strong work ethic and positive attitude are needed when running a business.
Both parents have supported me in every way & I’m grateful to be where I am in this journey of my business and my journey of life.
