We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Casey Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Casey below.
Casey, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Most of our songs are just stories, there’s always something going on in our lives so it’s nice to be able to channel those emotions into noise we like. Instrumentally we take inspiration from each other, we write in a pretty organic way.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are Von’s Island! We’re a band from San Gabriel Valley, California. Our music is mostly Alternative Punk with elements of Melodic Hardcore and Screamo.
We’re always playing shows all over Los Angeles, and California in general.
As of now we’re scheduled to play in Rosemead on November 22nd.
Recently we just released our newest EP, called “Back Of The Woods”, available on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Etc.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I definitely had trouble learning to ensue a democracy in a group of four people. Everyone has different ideas of what the future looks like so you have to find that middle ground.
It can also be a-lot of pain trying to push your way into your scene, LA is so competitive and some of the groups of bands can feel a little cult-y. It’s hard trying to introduce yourself and not feel like you’re looking for clout or something.
Finding people who are super like minded is in a difficulty of it’s own.
If I had any advice to anyone who’s inspired, I’d just say to go for it. Fans come up to us saying they want to learn an instrument, but what’s stopping you?

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I feel like we’ve improved a-lot in the past year, In December it’ll be a year since we released our debut album. Our shows have been having more pull. Just a-lot of examples of working smarter not harder. Not to mention all the friends we’ve made along the way that’ve helped us out.
