We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cassie Roland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cassie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I still struggle with this one a little bit. I think it’s very easy to compare ourselves to others, especially with social media always in front of us. Overcoming imposter syndrome is a daily practice for me. I always remind myself how far I have come and that there is nobody else like me who had my exact struggles, & that will forever be my ‘superpower’.’
Thoughts that still sneak up on me are…. am I good enough for this? Am I capable to lead?
I tell my daughters that they have to be kind to themselves daily and to say at least one thing they love about themselves every day. Little do they know; I am forever practicing with them.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Luxe is a luxury and eco-friendly hair salon that offers organic beauty products and hair cutting & coloring services to men, women, and children. We currently carry Kevin Murphy, Moroccanoil and K18 hair care lines and hair accessories by Kitsch, Emma Flhair and Steel& Clover Jewelry. Over the last 3 years we have also added body care lines from Moroccan oil, Spongelle and Silky body and bath.
We pride ourselves on our many continuing education classes throughout the year. Last year we took over 8 classes to stay up to date on product knowledge, Kevin Murphy haircut and color trends, as well as advanced up style techniques and our newest menu additions, hand tied hair extensions and Temptu airbrush makeup.
We also have a traveling wedding team that has really taken off this past year for styling and makeup.
We are mostly proud of the relaxing and positive environment we have created at Luxe. Many clients comment on our welcoming atmosphere, product delivery and talented artists. Thankfully there are many great hairdressers in the area, but what sets us apart is our environment, team and values. We want to be your day maker, not just your stylist. We are only 3 years into our Luxe journey, but we believe we are only getting started.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Experience, Grit and Courage. Without experience I wouldn’t have been able to navigate through many of the challenges that were thrown at me when starting a new business. The grit and courage gave me the ability to move forward without quitting. Some of the best advice I got when starting the business was, “do it scared.” I always think of those words when I doubt myself.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I didn’t have much parental guidance growing up. I think it’s fair to say, I had zero guidance. I always thought that gave me a disadvantage to my growth. It did in many ways, and it was very hard, but I now realize that having no body to help me made me as strong as I am. It taught me that quitting wasn’t an option and resilience was the only route I could take.
