We recently connected with Cat Lantigua and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cat, thank you so much for joining us and opening up about the very personal topic of divorce. So many in the community are going through or have gone through divorce and we think hearing about how others dealt with the aftermath and managed to build a vibrant, successful life and career despite the trauma of divorce can be helpful to many who might be feeling a degree of hopelessness. So, maybe you can talk to us about how you overcame divorce?
Well, to put it quite frankly, it wasn’t easy.
I went through an intense period of feeling shame, failure, and embarrassment because I’d told myself that I would do everything possible to avoid that as an outcome in my life. I spent months crying and feeling aimless because my entire life plan suddenly became null. At some point though, I began to shift my perspective and interpret my divorce as an opportunity to begin anew and commit to myself like never before. Instead of hyper fixating on what went wrong I thought about the fact that I had the chance to recommit to my dreams and build a new life centered around adventure, joy, creativity, platonic/familial love, and most importantly the freedom to do whatever I wanted.
Upon reflecting on my divorce as an opportunity to birth a new life, everything changed. I began to embody the essence of the woman I always knew I could be, but didn’t have the capacity to bring forth because I was distracted by the duties I felt inherently came with marriage. Shifting all of my energy into becoming the absolute best version of myself has become my North Star, and by pouring into this vision I have for myself, negative thoughts about divorce have naturally faded away.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m what folks call a multi-hyphenate! I write, facilitate, and produce podcasts. I’ve been the host/producer of the Chats with Cat podcast since 2017 and am currently working on a new show I hope to launch by the end of 2023. Between 2018-2021 I was the CEO/Founder of the women’s wellness collective called Goddess Council (GC). Throughout my time leading GC, I developed skills as a facilitator and community architect, which I now apply to helping brands and organizations bring to life their own visions for wellness programming and community-centric efforts.
At the end of 2022, I moved to Mexico City solo and committed to finishing the manuscript to my first book all about building intentional communities. I’m currently in the process of aligning myself with a literary agent that will help me bring this labor of love to bookstores near you!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 qualities that have led the way along my journey have without a doubt been bravery, resilience, and radical imagination.
Bravery
It only takes 5 seconds of bravery to completely transform your life. I’ve fully embraced this concept and leaned into doing scary things often. Regulating your nervous system after 5 seconds of bravery isn’t as hard as it might seem!
Resilience
There’s something that clicks in your mind once you realize that the difficult moments can’t inherently destroy you. It’s truly about making the decision to keep on going. This isn’t to say that we should bypass the processing of heartbreak, grief, or disappointment, but instead to point to the fact that we have everything within us to not only withstand difficult moments but to also level up on the other side of the lessons at hand.
Radical Imagination
I have sourced much of my grounding and joy from dreaming up new ideas and then bringing them to life. These days it’s easy to become disillusioned about the direction the world is heading, but by focusing on the ideas we have in our minds it’s easier to imagine a better reality because we’re single handedly creating solutions.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
As I continuously re-imagine my life post-divorce, the biggest area of growth has been leaning into faith. In the words of Abraham Hicks says (delete) “everything is working out for you no, matter how it looks at any moment.”
