Meet Catherine Delcin

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Catherine Delcin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Catherine, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Self-introspection and awareness are critical keys to the personal growth needed to become successful in life and for any business endeavor. You cannot be effective at doing anything in life without proper self-governance. That includes understanding your opportunities, limitations, risks, rewards, and benefits. It is important to know and decide for yourself what being the only one in the room means and how to properly navigate that scenario as it manifests in your journey. Before contemplating a successful way of navigating that realm, you must have a good understanding of your capabilities and the value that you bring.
In my opinion, being the only one in the room that looks a particular way presents unparalleled opportunities that your contributions would be unique and creative. You are more likely to generate unique solutions when you are the only one in the room that comes from a specific background, or have a specific set of experiences. I have found that my success does not depend on whether I am the only one in the room that is labeled in particular way. Instead it depends on the value that I bring to those in the room through my approach of solving the problems that they have and offering appropriate solutions that are best suited for their circumstances.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am the Managing Attorney for Delcin Consulting Group. I launched the firm in 2011 to provide legal services to existing and aspiring entrepreneurs [for profit or nonprofit] in business formation, transactions and litigation. Over the years, the scope of the firm increased to offer additional services for civil & commercial litigation, intellectual property and several general practice areas including immigration. Our firm offers a unique value proposition of hybrid services which includes a component of consulting in addition to the legal services for all of our practice areas. Delcin Consulting Group has offices in northern California, Los Angeles, and San Diego. I am excited to share that we just launched a new office in Washington DC.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The most important qualities that have been the most impactful for my life and entrepreneurial journey have been, an enterprising spirit, the disposition to always learn, and the awareness of the limitations of what I know or what I think I know. I have not had a typical journey. My unique background and experiences have enabled me to use the aforementioned throughout my life’s journey in ways that have served me well.
My advice to those who are early in their journey would be to stay attuned to what their life experiences are trying to teach them because that is the key to their success. Everyone’s path is different. What may be a person’s key to successfully navigating their journey may not be what someone else needs. Instead, plan your path to success by identifying the lessons that life is trying to teach you through your special set of circumstances. Life whispers. It shares its secrets to us and through us. We only have to listen.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

My parents changed all of our lives when they brought me and my 4 siblings to the United States. Although it was a long time ago, I still recall getting in the American Airlines airplane excited and anxious that I was headed to “the land of opportunity.” My journey in America has not been without its challenges, nonetheless, I have found that there have been equally oportune moments that have enabled me to accomplish most of the things that I set out to do. My coming to America journey has been the catalyst for my emboldened path through life as individual and as an entrepreneur.
