We recently connected with Catie Eovaldi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Catie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I definitely learned my work ethic from watching my mom while growing up. My mom was an entrepreneur and I watched her build businesses and how she managed it all. When I was really young, she owned her own daycare company and was successful at it. She closed that business because she ended up finding a passion for computers and writing training materials. She worked for a large company, and then branched off on her own again when I was a teenager to build interactive training programs for all sorts of companies. I think the biggest take away I saw from her was how hard she worked to scale her businesses and she never let a failure set her back.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a wedding photographer based in Michigan. I travel all over Michigan to document couples’ wedding days and preserve their memories for years to come. Wedding photography is different than your normal every day portraits because of how special the day is. Your wedding photos are something you’ll look back on and use throughout your life, so I strive to create imagery that is timeless & elegant.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my journey as a photographer and business owner, a skillset of problem solving, teamwork, and strategic thinking have been the most impactful in starting and growing a business.
The best advice I can give to others is to never stop learning. Seek out opportunities to grow and continue your education in any way you can!
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
There’s nothing wrong with having weaknesses. I personally try to invest my efforts to improve areas I’m not strong in in order to learn more and grow. I have a desire to learn and I’m always trying to be my best self.
Last year an area of my business that I really struggled in was social media management. Before owning a business I wasn’t on social media. I had accounts but they remained pretty bare and I hardly got on. Social media is a huge marketing tool for wedding photographers so this was a weak area I needed to grow into. I invested into some education and learned from peers how to use social media as a tool. I still have things to learn, but I’ve significantly improved over the past year.
