Meet Catyra Polland

We recently connected with Catyra Polland and have shared our conversation below.

CaTyra, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by pursuing my goals and connecting with others who encourage me. I also write poetry and articles to express my ideas. I draw inspiration from my clients and other creatives.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a logophile (lover of words). I write and edit books, reports, presentations, blogs, web copy, and more. I help authors and organizations with writing content that engages, inspires, encourages, and educates their target market. I’m a silent artist who values authenticity and creativity. I am the founder of National Black Authors Day (May 4). I created the day to uplift and celebrate past, current, and future Black authors. I’m preparing to release my next book, Legacy Beyond Offspring, I share how child-free adults can leave a legacy.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Authenticity: I’ve always valued being true to myself. I make decisions based on my best interest. I value myself and my contributions so I must do things that align with who I am.

Tip: If it doesn’t feel good then it’s not good for you.

2. Communication: Expressing myself has been essential to my success and fulfillment. It has helped me handle difficult situations and resolve various problems. I’m grateful for my adept communication skills in my personal and professional life.

Tip: Practice communicating. Whether it’s for a presentation, an essay, or other writing assignment or non-verbal cues, you should practice. Ask for feedback from others to help you hone your communication skills.

3. Creativity: I have always been super creative. I love innovation. Writing is one way I utilize my creativity. I started Editor Knows Best (an international podcast), the 2025 Editors Calendar, Writers Paradise, and other initiatives and projects that showcase my enterprise spirit.

Tip: Identify your passions and explore them! Research how you can dive in to what matters most to you.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

I listen to jazz music or an inspirational YouTube video/podcast. I also love to travel. Traveling helps me feel calmer and less anxious. Sometimes I’ll take a nap or go for a walk. My cats, Honeycomb and Cocomelon are another big help when I feel overwhelmed.

Tip: Separate yourself from the person or thing that is overwhelming you at the moment. Plan to come back to it once you’ve regained composure.
