We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cause For Concern. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cause below.
Cause , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
We don’t keep our creativity alive. We sustain it; it’s a living breathing thing. Everyone has creativity, but it’s about fostering an environment where you feel comfortable enough to be creative.
A lot of that comes with trust in each other. Not only do we trust in each other as musicians, but as friends and brothers. We enable each other’s creativity in way that’s not positive or negative. We focus on the art and creative process more then the outcome.
We’ve all been making music our entire lives. This is the first real passion project that all of us are involved in. We have all been involved in other groups and bands, but this is the first time we’ve feel at home. Cause for Concern just started out as a couple of new friends hanging out in a basement with some instruments around. Now, within a year, we’ve written 30 originals, preformed them live, and working on our first studio album.
Cause for Concern’s best and most creative moments come from when us three are just hanging out, having some beers in the basement, and doing what we love.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We just love making music, and performing it for people. We don’t limit ourselves to our sound. We aim to create original rock n’ roll bursting with energy and creativity. Groovy, bluesy cuts intertwined with psychedelic, fuzzy numbers and catchy riffs define Cause for Concern.
Not only do we believe in our music, but we believe in putting on a show. We realize that when performing live, people are not only listening to us, but are watching us. We want people to remember Cause for Concern not only for our music, but for our personalities and our style.
After a year of writing originals, we are finally working on our first studio album. We’re exited for our fans to truly experience a Cause for Concern.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First, it’s the love for the music. The art that you create should be the art that you yourself would enjoy. If people can sense that you are passionate about your art, then people will be passionate about you.
Next, is creative chemistry and teamwork. No band starts out amazing – it starts with trust. We build each other up with time, practice, and accountability. We help each other grow as musicians and individuals, and this helps us become a better band.
Finally, it’s realizing that less is more. We try to take ourselves out of the individual mindset when writing songs. It’s not about trying to show off your own skills, it’s about finding your space in the band and helping the other members find their own space.
The biggest advice we have for new bands – is just jump into the water! You’re going to get wet either way. Keep an open mind – a band isn’t made up of one member. Listen to your band and be open to new ideas. Book as many shows as you can. It’s all about experience and learning. When writing music, don’t take anything too seriously and focus on having fun. With time, you’ll find yourself and your sound.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
In today’s day and age, social media is a huge part of growing your name. Networking and branding have always been around, but it’s never been as accessible as it is today. You can play as many shows as you possibly can, but if people can’t find your music and can’t find your name, then it’s difficult to grow. In the past year, we actively improved our social media presence by putting out videos, photos from our shows, and custom gig posters. Doing these things improved our following and helped us connect with fans.
We’ve been playing with new bands and at new venues; this grew our presence in the community and started new relationships with venues. Getting our music out to as broad of an audience as possible has been one of our goals for the past 12 months. The more we played, the more opportunities we’ve had. We’ve gone from playing local shows at dive bars to playing festivals and venues hours away in different cities.
