Cecilia, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I always stay curious about the world around me, I explore new subjects, ideas, and perspectives and I ask questions, seek out information, and be open to learning. I also try new activities, visit new places, and expose myself to different cultures, art forms, and disciplines. Experiencing new things can spark your imagination and provide fresh inspiration.
I take time to reflect on my thoughts, emotions, and experiences and I surround yourself with diverse sources of inspiration, such as books, movies, music, art, nature, or conversations with interesting people.
I’m not afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Creativity often requires experimentation and trial-and-error. I view failures as learning opportunities and stepping stones toward improvement.
Last and most important I engage with fellow creatives, join communities, and collaborate with others who share my interests. Sharing ideas and working with others can provide valuable feedback, generate new perspectives, and inspire fresh approaches.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Since I moved to New York City in August 2022 as a professional architect, I have been on an exhilarating journey in one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic architectural landscapes. With my expertise and passion for design, I have seamlessly integrated into the architectural community, leaving my mark on the city’s ever-changing skyline. My career in architecture has been shaped by a strong educational background and a diverse portfolio of projects. Prior to my move, I obtained a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architecture from Politecnico di Milano, equipping me with a solid foundation in design principles, structural engineering, and construction techniques. I also gained practical experience through internships and apprenticeships, honing my skills in drafting, modeling, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

My expertise extends across various architectural styles and project types. In the past, I have worked on both residential and commercial projects, ranging from high-rise buildings to cultural institutions. My portfolio showcases a blend of modern and sustainable design principles, reflecting my commitment to creating functional, visually appealing spaces that harmonize with their surroundings while meeting the needs of the people who inhabit them.

Since I moved to New York City in August 2022, my focus has shifted towards the realm of retail design. Embracing the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of this industry, I have eagerly delved into creating innovative and captivating retail spaces that engage customers and elevate the overall shopping experience.
Drawing upon my architectural expertise and design sensibilities, I have honed my skills in crafting retail environments that seamlessly blend functionality, aesthetics, and brand identity. Understanding the importance of creating spaces that reflect the unique characteristics and values of each retail brand, I have worked closely with clients to develop concepts that align with their vision and objectives.

In my retail projects, I prioritize creating a welcoming and immersive atmosphere that captivates customers from the moment they step foot into the store. I carefully consider the layout, circulation, and visual merchandising to ensure an optimal flow that encourages exploration and enhances product visibility. Lighting, materials, and color schemes are meticulously chosen to create the desired ambiance and evoke the desired emotional response.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Design Sensibility and Creativity: The ability to think creatively and have a strong design sensibility is essential for an architect. Cultivate your creativity by regularly engaging in activities that inspire you, such as visiting museums, attending art exhibitions, or exploring different architectural styles. Keep a sketchbook handy to jot down ideas and concepts that come to mind. Practice thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries of conventional design. Collaborate with other creative individuals, as their perspectives can broaden your horizons. Embrace critique and feedback, as they can help refine and strengthen your design sensibilities. 2. Technical Proficiency and Continued Learning: Architecture is a multifaceted field that requires a solid foundation in technical skills. Take advantage of opportunities for professional development, whether through workshops, conferences, or online courses.
3. Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication and collaboration are crucial in the architectural profession, where you work closely with clients, colleagues, and various stakeholders. Develop your verbal, written, and visual communication skills to effectively convey your design ideas and concepts. Practice presenting your work with clarity and confidence. Engage in collaborative projects to gain experience in teamwork and learn how to navigate diverse opinions and ideas.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Throughout my journey as an architect, I have been fortunate to have the support and guidance of individuals who have played a pivotal role in my development. Mentors have been instrumental in providing me with wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. Their expertise and feedback have helped me navigate challenges and refine my skills. Collaborating with talented colleagues and collaborators has expanded my knowledge and offered diverse perspectives. Working alongside clients and end-users has shaped my client-centered approach, enabling me to create designs that meet their needs and aspirations. Engaging with educational institutions, professional networks, and self-directed learning has allowed me to stay updated on industry advancements and foster ongoing growth. Ultimately, it is the combination of these individuals, experiences, and personal drive that have shaped my success as an architect.
