Meet Celestial

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Celestial a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Celestial, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

This is what we are. It comes from our core being. The three of us spent decades playing various genre specific music. Celestial Navigation is a culmination of that experience, with a disregard for norms and pretexts. It’s a process: always learning, always growing, always seeking unique perspectives. Mass appeal and instant gratification are not our concern. We derive satisfaction from the music itself. In this progression we’ve found a niche audience that appreciates our unique approach to complex harmonies and rhythms. Music is art and art is subjective. Every being on the planet has a unique voice. Tapping into that voice with the prowess to transform it into music is our raison d’être. We don’t rely on outside influences for morale. In today’s music world, we believe gratification should first come from within.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Charting new waters on the wind and waves of harmony – a musical trio based in Seattle, WA, featuring: Dr. Didem Somel (voice, violin, keys), Robby Albrecht (drums, voice), and Glen Anderson (double bass). Three albums and numerous singles released on all major platforms. We currently have a residency at the Sea Monster Lounge in Seattle the first Thursday of the month and you can look for our other shows in the Pacific Northwest as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Training: our principal composer obtained her doctorate in music performance and composition. We’ve all studied with some of the best instructors available. It’s important to have mentors early on.

Practice: in order to put into practice what you’ve learned, you need lots and lots of practice. Don’t look at it as a destination, but a journey.

Team Work: listening, trusting, making compromises, and being dependable – the sum is greater than the parts.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

Doing what we love with the ones we love.
