Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Celicia Butler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Celicia, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my late grandmother Mamie Lou Anderson. She raised me when I was younger and I always remember her working day and night to provide for me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m still baking desserts and this is my fifteen year anniversary that I’ve been doing it professionally. I’m also working on filming and helping agoraphobic people come out of the house. As I mentioned in a previous article, I was agoraphobic for eight years and God delivered me from the spirit of fear which can be very crippling so now I help others with my testimony. People really feel like they’re imprisoned in their own homes. It’s different for each person but they won’t drive and if they’ll even get in a car they have severe anxiety attacks. The driver will have to avoid bridges and highways. Some people may be able to go on a porch but some are totally home bound and have to have groceries and necessities delivered. Sometimes it can be as extreme as family members having to quit their jobs because the person is afraid to stay home by themselves. My prayer is that by filming my story, I can reach those suffering and God will use me so they will seek Him and find freedom and peace.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first one is a relationship with God. The second is clarity of purpose. You can’t have clarity without a relationship with God. The third is changing your mindset and surrounding yourself with people who know more than you. The only way to accomplish your goals and grow is to surround yourself with people who want better lives for themselves. You can’t surround yourself with complacent people and expect to be better. Two of my mentors are Keon Hardeman (Cakes by Keon) and Chef Maurice (A Taste of Elegance). They’re both masters in their business and have excelled in their craft.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My grandmother was the most supportive of me. She was always pushing me to be my best but always offered constructive criticism without being condescending. She spoke life into me when I was battling agoraphobia and she told me I would come out of it and by the grace of God, I did. Also my brother comedian Justin Whitehead has made a huge impact on my life. He’s been a beautiful friend and his accomplishments, strong work ethic, and life story has motivated and inspired me to continue when times are difficult.
