We were lucky to catch up with Cesar Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cesar, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I developed my work ethic thanks to my parents. My parents are immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico and know what hard work is. Through their example I was able to adapt a work ethic that has benefit me today academically, financially and professionally. Work ethic is everything, you have to show up everyday and magically opportunities and luck begins to come up in your life. I currently work 7 days a week and juggle many occupations. Currently, I bartend part time, have a small personal training business, study full time in a graduate program for Occupational Therapy and also, manage a small rental property, I am lucky to own. I definitely was not born with my work ethic, in high school and early in college I was never so dedicated. I would procrastinate and would indulge in unproductive activities. With time my attitude and work ethic began taking a positive trajectory and all that came through fitness and self improvement. Overall, I say my work ethic developed overtime, once your in it it’s easier to continue working than to be lazy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I feel the most passionate about training individuals through fitness. Seeing positive progress in my clients health, self esteem and energy, is what drives me. The impact I make in peoples life is noticeable within a few weeks and makes me feel good when individuals carry themselves with more confidence. Positive impact in peoples health and overall well being was a driving force for me to enroll in a graduate program of Occupational Therapy. Through Occupational Therapy I plan to expand my scope of expertise and indulge more in the medical field. Having an occupational therapy license on top of being a fitness trainer will enable me to make a larger impact in peoples life’s and reach a bigger audience.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Most impactful qualities in my journey include having charisma, having a high tolerance for stress or having effective coping mechanisms, and having patience. I find myself to be naturally charismatic and people are drawn to my calm energy. Having stress coping mechanisms is vital to move forward in your endeavors cause stress is inevitable and figuring out a way to suppress it without destructive behaviors is an advantage. Lastly, having patience is vital because everyone wants instant gratification, realizing and accepting that it will be a long journey will be an aid to your progress. My advice to someone to improve on charisma would be to get a job where you have the chance to interact with others like customer service or hospitality. To figure out a coping mechanism, I suggest trying a plethora of different hobbies that keep you grounded. Lastly, my advice on improving patience includes participating meditation or prayers and also to buy a journal so you can write goals.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Personally my biggest area of growth and improvement has been regarding income and business. I’m grateful or the position I am in because it allows me to focus in things that matter to me the most such as personal training and Occupational Therapy school. This growth came about due to working for others and learning from them, so I can venture out in my own business. Growth is never ending and I seek to improve my way in a different way throughout the next 12 months.
