We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cetonya Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cetonya below.
Cetonya , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is the result of internal and external characteristics, including genetics, physical, mental, and environment. My resilience comes from watching my self-talk. I make sure my narrative is always positive. I also try to put things into perspective.
So many of our feelings can be changed if we change our mindset. I always prioritize relationships and focus on building a healthy social support system.
I cut out the social comparisons and implement lots of self-care. Knowing what you want, practicing gratitude, practicing mindfulness, and knowing my strengths is what keeps me moving.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Our Southern Tea Cakes are these old fashioned, soft sugar cookies almost always have a story and a memory connected to them. I love to see the way people’s faces light up when they eat them, you know food and memories are so intertwined in southern cooking.
Since Covid, we have been more focused on providing services online buy selling our products (seasonings) and providing catering services for small intimate parties, and meal prepping. We launched a new seasoning last year, called “Southern Girl BBQ Rub”. We are super excited about this product, you know I’m from Texas and we take our BBQ very seriously, this product was created from my love of Grilling, BBQ-ing, and Smoking meats.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three quality or skills or areas of knowledge were most impactful in my journey is Self-motivation, A willingness to Learn, and Thinking outside of the box.
Self-motivation is about liking what you do enough to want to do a good job regardless of the external reward. Self-motivation can also be called “passion.”
Life-long learning is a must nowadays, new knowledge comes out all the time, and organizations and systems change. Whoever doesn’t learn risks staying behind, no matter their accumulated knowledge or position. A willingness, and ultimately, an ability to learn are very important qualities, not just for learning new hard skills, but also for growing as a professional and as a person.
“Thinking outside the box”. It is supposed to mean thinking creatively, freely, and off the beaten path.
Any advice given would be if you want to make the best of your life and career, you need to constantly challenge yourself. Don’t forget that nothing good comes without effort, and if you want to become an expert at what you do, you have to try your best to conquer these qualities.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The most helpful to me in overcome challenges and build and developed skills or knowledge for success has been a small group of family friends who push and encourage me. My 2 sisters who work alongside me in the business CM1, CM3. A lifelong friend and cousin who is my confidant, “Kimpooh”. Also 2 amazing friends who hold me accountable and encourage me DD, and Mar. Last but not least my mom, whom I get my cooking and love of serving and creating from. Without these women and support I wouldn’t be me.
It’s a win all around when women support each other. There’s no better feeling than helping another woman’s business, career, and ideas, trials, and triumphs.
